The tendency of any rotating body, if undisturbed, to maintain its plane of rotation.

Rigidity in space. The gyroscope resists turning. When it is "gimbaled" (free to move in a given direction) such that it is free to move either in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions, any surface such as an instrument dial attached to the gyro assembly will remain rigid in space even though the case of the gyro turns. The attitude indicator (AI) and the heading indicator (HI) use this property of rigidity in space for their operation.

The turning of the frisbee mostly produces "stability", that is the spinning keeps the frisbee level in flight due to the "gyroscopic" effect, i.e. any spinning disc likes to stay spinning at the same angle.

A gyroscope is any rotating body that exhibits two fundamental properties: gyroscopic inertia, or rigidity in space, and precession, the tilting of the axis at right angles to any force tending to alter the plane of rotation. These properties are inherent in all rotating bodies, including the earth itself.

L'inertie gyroscopique, appelée aussi effet gyroscopique, constitue la propriété fondamentale des gyroscopes. [...] Il s'agit d'un principe selon lequel tous les objets résistent naturellement à l'accélération ou au changement de direction. (Par exemple, les occupants d'une voiture sont projetés vers l'avant quand celle-ci s'arrête brusquement parce qu'en raison de leur inertie, les corps continuent leur mouvement vers l'avant même si la voiture s'est arrêtée.) Lorsqu'on parle d'inertie gyroscopique, on fait allusion à l'inertie que possède un corps qui tourne. Tous les objets tournant autour d'un axe ont tendance à maintenir une orientation fixe, c'est-à-dire une direction de rotation et une position fixes, si aucune force n'intervient. En d'autres mots, un objet qui tourne a tendance à rester dans la même position.

Certains spécialistes contestent l'emploi du terme «rigidité» qui semble être un calque de l'anglais occasionnant un non-sens en français.

The attitude indicator (also called the artificial horizon or the gyro horizon) provides the pilot with an artificial horizon as a means of reference when the natural horizon cannot be seen because of cloud, fog, rain or other obstructions to visibility... The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument.

The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument’s little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane.

The attitude indicator and heading indicator are based on a gyro's rigidity in space. Because a gyro resists being tipped over, it can provide a stable reference to the real horizon or to a specific direction.

Horizon artificiel. Cet instrument gyroscopique indique au pilote la position des ailes et du nez de l'avion par rapport à l'horizon terrestre lorsque l'horizon naturel n'est pas visible en raison des nuages, du brouillard, de la pluie.

En cas de perte des références extérieures, (rentrer dans un nuage, forte dégradation de la visibilité par brume ou pluie...), le pilote ne disposera plus que d'une vision réduite de son environnement par l'intermédiaire de l'horizon artificiel. Cet instrument sera - au même titre que l'horizon naturel en pilotage à vue - sa référence principale.

L'horizon artificiel dont se servent les pilotes d'avion est produit par un gyroscope en mouvement. Cet instrument est extrêmement important pour les pilotes puisqu'il leur indique la position de l'avion par rapport à l'horizon vrai.

OBS

Les termes «horizon terrestre» et «horizon naturel» ne sont pas de parfaits synonymes mais, en contexte de pilotage avion, on peut penser que les deux termes se confondent.
