Mixing Layer Depth ... The mixing layer is the atmospheric zone near the surface where pollutants disperse rapidly. The depth of this layer depends on the temperature and on the stability of the atmosphere at low levels. Lower values of mixing layer depth indicate that the pollutants will be mixed in a smaller volume of air.

The mixing height is the depth of the unstable air in the boundary layer and is used for forecasting smoke or pollutant trajectories.

Water artificially applied in the form of rain, usually by a rainfall simulator for experimental purposes.

In BRI's laboratory for building foundation and soils, full-scale testing for soil dynamics is performed. A large-scale, shear soil layer box(5 m x 4 m x 10 m) is equipped in five large pits 6 m below ground to reproduce vibration of the ground during an earthquake. A test for rainfall is conducted in this laboratory using an artificial rainfall apparatus with an intensity up to 150 mm/h that addresses soil pressure during rainfall. In the wind and rain test laboratory, experiments are conducted on the effects of wind on buildings, the waterproof performance of finishes, and the air-flow characteristics in and around buildings.

They exposed different Sphagnum species to artificial rain (pH 4.2) containing different concentrations of bisulphite or sulphate, within the limits of very high values encountered in some samples of rain.

However, if we are not interested in accurate solutions and consider one layer only, we can see the meaning of the friction force as first shown by C. M. Guldberg and H. Mohn in 1883. The wind profile near the earth's surface is usually convex, if represented on a graph with wind speed versus height. The wind speed increases from zero at the earth's surface to significant values near the anemometer level, and further increase of wind speed with height continues at a slower rate. In this situation, the second derivatives of u and v may be assumed proportional to-u and-v, respectively :
