Those who recorded the period of the fur trade in writing noted a distinction which still exists today between Crees of the coast (Coasters) and Crees from the interior (Inlanders). The main activity of the coastal Crees was goose hunting; their hunting and trapping territories were not very far away and did not require the use of a canoe ... The inland Crees, more numerous than those of the coast and occupying the land at a distance from the coast, only came to the post once a year to exchange their furs; they were the main suppliers of pelts.

There are four ways to express an indigenous collectivity in English : 1) with the plural inflection "-s"; 2) if the collectivity does not apply to a subgroup, with the use of the term "nation", as in the Cree nation; 3) with the use of the word "people", as in the Huron and Cree peoples; 4) with the use of the definite article, e. g. The Cree of the coast make up the aboriginal nation occupying the Haute-Mauricie region. Since the "-s" is redundant, this author prefers the use of the definite article(e. g. the Cree, the Haida, etc.). However the use of "nation" is the option preferred most by the Native peoples of Canada, for political reasons.

Until the turn of the 19th century, the Haidas’ distinctive ocean-going canoe was at the heart of their connections to the sea. Carved from giant red cedars and steamed into the classical Haida canoe form, these canoes were a vital aspect of Haida culture and economy, facilitating long distance travel, offshore fishing and sea mammal hunting.

The return of traditional ocean-going canoe travels emerged in 1989 when nine traditional cedar dug-out canoes made their journey to the Port of Seattle.

Soul catcher of a Haida shaman used in curing ceremonies. The soul of the patient was recaptured by the shaman who plugged the ends with cedar bark until the soul could be returned to the body.

Lorsqu'ils soignaient un malade, les shamans employaient cet appareil tubulaire pour reprendre son âme et supprimer ainsi la cause du mal. Pour forcer l'âme à demeurer dans le tube jusqu'à ce qu'on la remettre en place une fois le traitement fini, on bouchait les deux extrémités avec des touffes de fibres d'écorce de cèdre.
