Nom générique d'un grand nombre de résines dures et semi-dures, à cassure vitreuse, très utilisées dans la fabrication des vernis et des laques. Variétés : Zanzibar, Madagascar, Demerava (durs), Angola rouge, Benguela, Congo (demi-durs).

Les copals sont des résines naturelles (bien que l'on parle souvent -à tort- de gommes copal) le plus souvent d'origine exotique. La plupart d'entre elles sont fossiles et dures; les copals de récolte sont moins durs et plus solubles [...] Ces résines sont devenues très chères et sont de moins en moins utilisées en peinture de bâtiment; par contre, on les emploie toujours pour la peinture à l'huile artistique.

A rotary boring bit consisting of two to four-cone-shaped, toothed rollers which are turned by the rotation of the drill rods. They are used in hard rock in oil well boring and other deep holes down to 15, 000 feet and more. Although their penetration speed is somewhat slow, roller bits last longer which is a very important factor in deep drilling.

In rolling cutter bits, the cone type bits currently manufactured have three cutters or two cutters. For general overall use the bit with three cones is a better balanced bit.

Roller-cone bits are also called rock bits. The surface of each cone is made up of rows of steel or tungsten carbide teeth or rows of tungsten carbide inserts. Tungsten carbide insert bits are usually used to drill extremely hard formations.

The main source of sandalwood is Santalum album, a small evergreen tree native to India. The heartwood of S. album is yellow-brown, very hard, and close grained. It is made odorous by the presence of an oil, which is even more abundant in the roots... Red sandalwood is obtained from Pterocarpus santalinus, a small leguminous tree found in southern India, Ceylon, and the Philippines. This wood is used in making a dye that gives wool a red-brown color.

"Santal" est le nom commun du genre santalum. Il désigne, par extension, le bois de cet arbre et l'essence qui en est extraite. Le terme "bois de santal" (ou "santal") réfère plus particulièrement à Santalum album ("santal citrin" ou "santal du Mysore"), mais s'emploie également pour diverses espèces, dont Santalum spicatum ("santal d'Australie") et quelques autres. Il en est même arrivé à désigner, abusivement, des produits parfois très différents : Guarea cedrata ("santal d'Afrique"), Epicaris Loureiri ("santal de Cochinchine"), etc. Un type de santal bien connu est le "rouge de Saunders", extrait de Pterocarpus santalinus.
