The JEM-EF can provide the resources of power, communication and heat rejection capability to the payload via the EEU [Equipment Exchange Unit]. The EEU consists of an Exposed Facility Unit (EFU) and a Payload Interface Unit (PIU). The EFU can connect and disconnect the payload with/from the JEM-EF. The PIU [Payload Interface Unit] should be attached to all JEM-EF experiment payloads.

The European Drawer Rack(EDR) provides a modular capability for sub-rack payloads contained in Standard Experiment Drawers(SEDs) and Mid-Deck Lockers(MDLs) accommodated in an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack]. The EDR supports the independent operation of the multiple sub-rack payload hardware as well as the provision of a standardised interface to laboratory resources. It supports payload exchange at SED or MDL level. A fundamental goal of the EDR is to support the development of smaller sub-rack payloads through the provision of accommodation and flight opportunities where quick turnaround mission objectives are required.

The EXPRESS Rack provides simple, standard interfaces. Two types of payload accommodations are offered : Middeck Locker type interfaces and International Subrack Interface Standard drawer interfaces. Middeck Locker interfaces are offered to allow payloads(a middeck locker or equivalent replacement container) that have previously flown in the shuttle middeck, Spacelab, SpaceHab, or MIR to transition to ISS [International Space Station] using the same interface. Eight single middeck locker positions are offered by the EXPRESS Rack. Single, double, or quad equivalent containers may be accommodated by the EXPRESS Rack in the locker positions.

SIR... stands for Standard Interface Rack. SIR is a system for integrating hardware. It is a technology we use to take Earth things to space. The rack contains mechanical parts, called a liner, used to slide drawers in and out, much like a file cabinet. Drawers are used to contain or repackage things and make them flight ready. For example, we can’t take computers to space in the same outer packages or cases we use on Earth because some pieces may float out or the vibration from launch would destroy them. So, we take all the computer's guts from the central processing unit(its brain) and repackage it in one of these drawers. On the rack side, the SIR also provides power and data for the drawers through cables. Power for a drawer comes from a connector in the rack, just like a wall outlet at your house. Data cables serve many purposes, but the main one is for communication. This is so drawers can "talk" to each other, the Space Station, and Earth. For the computer drawer mentioned above, parts are wired to connectors in the drawer. When you slide the drawer into the rack, it connects to cables already in the rack.

The EXPRESS Rack utilizes an International Standard Payload Rack(ISPR) in conjunction with secondary structure and avionics hardware, resulting in a simple payload interface. The rack provides accommodations for eight middeck lockers and two Standard Interface Rack(SIR) drawers. Each middeck location can accommodate 72 pounds of experiment equipment, including container weight. Each SIR drawer position accommodates 64 pounds, including the weight of the drawer. A total of 2 kW of 28 Vdc power is provided to the payloads in the rack, with each payload position receiving up to 500 W.
