The preliminary mechanical processing of the dried [hemp] stalks involves some fairly vigorous handling of the raw material, including breaking, scutching and the separation of the line fibres from the tow and other by-products. The stronger, more solid fibre bundles keep their original lengths and parallelism. During breaking and scutching the weaker and shorter fibres(tow), especially those at the foot of the stalks, break away and are removed together with the hurds, dust, soil, etc.... The hurds are removed pneumatically and may be sold for use as natural fertiliser, for the heat insulation of buildings, as fuel or as animal litter... Natural fibre producers have proven an important link in the emerging bioeconomy. Though cultivation of natural fibres such as cotton, sisal, and kenaf is not being considered right now in Canada, mainly because of the climate, others, such as flax and hemp, are now being taken very seriously. The fibre... is usually yellowish, greenish, or a dark brown or gray and, because it is not easily bleached to sufficiently light shades, is rarely dyed. It is strong and durable and is used for cordage, e. g., twine, yarn, rope, cable, and string; and for artificial sponges and such coarse fabrics as sacking(burlap) and canvas. L'obtention de la fibre technique du chanvre est identique à celle du lin. Avant le peignage donnant le chanvre à long brin qui sera travaillé en filature à l'étoupe, les fibres techniques sont coupées en trois parties d'environ 80 centimètres,celle du milieu présentant les meilleures caractéristiques. La fibre ultime, d'une longueur de 10 à 40 millimètres, est moins régulière, plus aplatie et légèrement plus lignifiée que celle du lin.
