The organization behind an amateur or professional team or athlete; the group of people in charge of attracting or drafting the best players, providing the space and equipment for training, hiring the coaches and trainers to do so, organizing the meets of the regular season and the playoffs or registering their athletes in competitions, and representing the whole organization in official matters dealing with the sport, the league or the national and international federations.

In the early days, baseball was an amateur game. But it was so popular and winning became so important, that clubs (the administration) began to offer players money or jobs to join them. The first professional team (meaning the administration) paying all its players openly was the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1869. [In both cases, the term "club" should have been used.] In 1876, the National League was formed with eight teams. The American League, also with eight teams, claimed major league status in 1901.

[Si le terme «club» est utilisé avec le sens d'«équipe», l'inverse est aussi vrai comme en témoigne ce qui suit.] Au début, on a considéré le baseball comme un sport amateur. Mais le jeu connut un tel succès et la victoire devint si importante que les clubs (les administrations) commencèrent à offrir aux joueurs un poste et un salaire. En 1869, les Red Stockings de Cincinnati deviennent la première équipe (terme ayant ici le sens d'administration) professionnelle où tous les joueurs sont payés officiellement. En 1876, huit équipes (avec le sens d'équipe) se regroupent pour créer la Ligue nationale. La Ligue américaine réclame son statut de ligue majeure en 1901, avec huit équipes aussi.

Bien distinguer entre le terme anglais «club» qui se rend par «équipe de joueurs, groupe de joueurs qui disputent des matchs ou participent à des compétitions» du même terme «club» qui se rend par «club» en français et signifie «l'organisation, l'ensemble des actionnaires ou des administrateurs de l'équipe». Par exemple, le Club canadien de Montréal comprend l'ensemble que forment les propriétaires, les administrateurs et le groupe de joueurs administrés en tant que propriété des actionnaires tandis que les joueurs qui évoluent sur la glace composent l'équipe du club; ainsi, une victoire de l'«équipe du Canadien» est aussi une victoire du «Club canadien», mais dire une victoire du «Club du Canadien» ou du «Club des Canadiens» est incorrect, son nom étant le «Club canadien de Montréal». Cependant, on utilise souvent «le club canadien», «le club des Canadiens de Montréal» ou «les Canadiens de Montréal» pour désigner l'équipe de joueurs du Club Canadien de Montréal; s'il s'agit souvent de paroles, il faudrait veiller à ne pas reproduire l'erreur par écrit. Il se peut que la synonymie sans complexe entre les deux termes, comme on la constate dans la langue parlée et sous la plume de journalistes, devienne acquise sous peu : l'une des sources consultées donne «club» comme terme ayant la signification d'«équipe sportive» et définit «équipe» avec un renvoi à «club», sans ajouter de précision quant à la distinction à apporter entre ces deux termes; tandis que d'autres sources utilisent le terme «équipe» alors que «club» aurait été plus approprié.
