Bomb Vessel : Developed by the French to battle the Barbary corsairs, these vessels used high trajectory mortars instead of conventional guns. The hull was strengthened to take the weight of one or more mortars and the foremast was completely omitted. Late 18th century bomb vessels would have had a full three-masted rig, and some were used for perilous polar expeditions since their sturdily built hulls would hold up well in the ice.

There is an extremely important design consideration when constructing and installing pull-outs in a cabinet behind doors. The European hinge, that is often used, has the ability to open in less than the space it requires for door overlap. In effect, the door mounted with these hinges opens in a space less than 5/8" which puts the edge of the door slightly inside the face frame opening. While this feature is extremely beneficial, particularly when two doors are close together, it means that a pull-out will rub or hit the door. To provent this, 1" by 2" cleats are installed on the interior of the carcass, and the drawer glides are mounted to the cleats.

There are three principal types of augers used for well drilling : bucket augers, solid-stem augers, and hollow-stem augers.... Solid-stem augers consist of spiral flanges welded to a pipe. The Charlottetown Accord was a package of constitutional amendments, proposed by the Canadian federal and provincial governments in 1992. It was submitted to a public referendum on October 26 of that year, and was defeated. Unlike the Meech Lake Accord, the Charlottetown Accord's ratification process provided for a national referendum. Three provinces--British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec--had recently passed legislation requiring that constitutional amendments be submitted to a public referendum. As well, Quebec premier Robert Bourassa had pledged, contingent on the results of the Charlottetown negotiations, to hold a referendum that year on either Quebec independence or a new constitutional agreement. British Columbia and Alberta agreed to participate in the federal referendum, but Quebec opted to conduct its own separate vote.(For that reason, Quebeckers "temporarily" living outside the province could have two votes, since they were enumerated to the voters’ list based on federal rules, but people relatively new to Quebec could not vote at all because they had not established residency.) The Accord had to be approved not only by a majority of voters nationally, but also by a majority of voters in each province. If it failed in just one province, the accord would not pass.

For both caverns and tunnels, excavation is from the central tunnel ways using conventional mining techniques. In the tunnel concept ..., the prepackaged wastes are lowered down the shaft and brought to the emplacement vaults by rail. The packages are then unloaded by forklifts or other conventional container handling equipment and emplaced for permanent disposal. The cavern concept implements a secondary haulage system where packaged wastes are transferred from rail to the emplacement vaults by overhead crane.

The Konrad mine has some geological features which make it very suitable for disposal of certain types of radioactive waste. ... Geotechnical properties of the rock allow construction of disposal caverns of adequate volume. Galleries containing wastes in drums or contaminated components can be backfilled and sealed, as well as the rest of the mine, including the two shafts.

The concept [burying the waste deep underground in the Canadian Shield] isolates used fuel from the environment using a series of natural as well as manmade barriers. Used nuclear fuel bundles would be contained in vaults 500 to 1, 000 metres below ground. These vaults would consist of a network of tunnels and disposal rooms about 2 kilometres by 2 kilometres that could hold 191, 000 tonnes of used fuel.

La roche hôte doit posséder des propriétés mécaniques favorables à la réalisation des ouvrages de stockage et à la sécurité de leur exploitation pendant des dizaines d'années. La connaissance des caractéristiques mécaniques est nécessaire pour déterminer les dimensions et géométries optimales des ouvrages profonds (galeries, puits, cavités, forme de piliers...). Elles permettront de programmer la conduite des chantiers miniers. Les propriétés mécaniques de la roche hôte devront garantir la stabilité des différentes structures dans un domaine de profondeur pouvant aller jusqu'à environ 1000 m.

Les volumes à excaver pour créer un stockage en profondeur comprennent : les ouvrages de stockage proprement dits, puits verticaux pour les déchets de haute activité ou galeries horizontales pour les déchets alpha et les ouvrages d'accès, puits verticaux partant de la surface et galeries reliant ces puits aux ouvrages de stockage.

An increase in the thickness of clouds as described by cloud liquid water content would generally increase the albedo of the clouds but have little effect on the longwave emission of all but nonblack cirrus clouds. Greatest albedo change for given increase in liquid water is possible for relatively thin clouds since thick clouds are essentially saturated in brightness. Various suggestions have been offered as to how clouds might change with a warmer climate. A warmer atmosphere would hold more water vapour and possibly also more liquid water, hence cloud thickness could well increase.
