[One] type of flute is a globular flute, also called a vessel flute. "Ocarina" is a common name for one of the most common types of globular flutes. Unlike their tubular flute cousins, globular flutes can be any shape, but still have finger holes and a blow hole, and are played in generally the same fashion as a tubular flute.... The physics of sound production is significantly different between tubular and globular instruments. In a tubular instrument, a vibrating column of air produces the sound. The length of this air column is the primary factor determining the pitch. However, the pitch can be modified by uncovering toneholes along the body of the instrument, which effectively shorten the length of the air column and raise the pitch. But with globular instruments, the shape of the air contained within the vessel is generally irrelevant to the pitch. It's the total volume of air contained in the vessel and the size of the opening that determines the pitch.

One consequence of cabin pressurization is that the pressure inside the airplane might be 70 kPa(10 psi), while the pressure outside is only 15 kPa(2 psi). An otherwise-harmless pinhole under these pressure differences will generate a high-pitched squeal as the air leaks out at supersonic speeds. A hole a metre and a half(5 feet) across will depressurize a jetliner in a fraction of a second.

Cabin pressurization is the active pumping of air into an aircraft cabin to increase the air pressure within the cabin. It is required when an aircraft reaches high altitudes, because the natural atmospheric pressure is too low to allow people to absorb sufficient oxygen, leading to altitude sickness and ultimately hypoxia.

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability.

A recently developed instrument known as an "emanometer, "or "radon sniffer, "has been used to measure the radon content of water, oils and soils. Since radon is a noble gas, it does not form chemical compounds. It moves freely through pore spaces, joints and faults for distances up to several hundred feet. It will also dissolve in ground water and so move about in the subsurface. How to Make A Hobo Stove. Take a gallon paint can(exact size not important-experiment). Cut holes in sides of can... Throw anything combustible in and light it on fire. The air flows in the bottom hole, and the aerodynamics of the can suck the exhaust out of the top holes. This forms a vicious through draught, and the fire burns almost white hot in a strong wind! It also uses very little fuel. Fire temperature can be controlled by turning can away from the wind a bit, or by obstructing the inlet hole.

Before installing a plant, a cushion of conditioned topsoil should be spread over the bottom of the hole. Next, the plant should be carefully deposited at a finish-grade level identical with its original growing condition. To allow for expected settlement of large plants, they should be placed slightly higher in the pit. Then the rest of the hole should be backfilled with more humus-enriched topsoil while the soil layers are judiciously tamped to remove any detrimental air pockets near the roots. Each installation should always be followed with generous watering.

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments. For burner adjustment the serviceman measures the draft that provides air for combustion and the smoker or soot content of the exiting flue gases.... Measurements are made through a small hole in the flue pipe within 46 cm of the flue gas exit on the furnace. If the layout of the flue pipe makes this impossible, the serviceman has to make a hole wherever he can.... It should be located between the furnace and the barometric damper but not directly beside the barometric damper.

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal.
