The idea of forming the Association of Surgeons of South East Asia first occurred to the late Professor Tan Sri GB Ong of the University of Hong Kong in 1967. The objectives of the Association were to establish professional ties between the surgeons of South East Asia and to provide a forum for the dissemination of surgical knowledge throughout the region.

To encourage and stimulate research in dermatology in furtherance of the objects of the Association. 5. To stimulate public interest and provide public education in dermatology. 6. The first documented infection of humans with an avian influenza virus occurred in Hong Kong in 1997, when the H5N1 strain caused severe respiratory disease in 18 humans, of whom 6 died.
