The localizer signal emitted from the transmitter site at the far end of the runway is confined within an angular width between 3° and 6°. The localizer provides course guidance throughout the descent path to the runway threshold from a distance of 18 NM [nautical miles] from the antenna between a height of 1000 ft above the highest terrain along the approach path and 4500 ft above the elevation of the antenna site.

In a similar manner as the LOC signal, the GS [glide slope] sends a UHF [ultra high frequency] carrier signal with the same two 90-Hz and 150-Hz sideband frequencies that aircraft instruments determine as above or below the desired glide path. This is approximately 3 degrees to the horizon which gives the aircraft a descent rate of approximately 500 feet per minute.

The above photo shows a halo phenomenon known as the upper tangent arc. When cirrus clouds contain columnar ice crystals aligned so that their axes are all in a horizontal direction, this type of arc may be produced. A characteristic of this arc-shaped patch of light is that it’s directly above the Sun (it bends upward away from the Sun), and it’s approximately 22 degrees away from the Sun itself - about 2 fists held at arms length.

The 22° halo is most common, but other halo forms are sometimes seen. The tangent arcs to the 22° halo can appear if the sun's declination is less than 32°. One is called the lower tangent arc to the 22° halo, and the other is the upper tangent arc to the 22° halo. The shape of these tangent haloes depends upon the sun's declination. If the sun is close to the horizon, the two upper arcs angle sharply away from the 22° halo. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the tangent arcs move toward the 22° halo. When the sun's declination reaches 32°above the horizon, the lower and upper tangent arcs make contact, and the resulting ring is called the circumscribed halo. It touches the 22° halo above and beneath the sun. When the sun is just above 32°the circumscribed halo resembles a double oval. As the sun rises higher it becomes increasingly circular and draws nearer to the 22° halo. When the sun's declination exceeds 70°, the circumscribed arc nearly coincides with the 22° halo.

It contained two air-tight integrating gyro units to sense pitch and yaw, and one miniature integrating gyro unit to sense roll. The pitch and roll gyros were torqued by signals obtained by two Barnes mod IIA infrared horizon sensors. Gyrocompassing oriented the vehicle to an orbit plane yaw reference by detecting a component of the programmed pitch rate through the roll horizon sensor. The geocentric pitch rate(typically 4 deg/min, for a low-altitude orbit) was programmed as a constant torque to the pitch gyro. This pitch component, if a yaw error was present, would be sensed differentially when compared with the roll components of the two horizon-sensor heads. The differential would be seen as a function of yaw error.

During heading align, the rotor of the resolver is positioned so that it transforms the N-S and E-W liquid level signals into pitch and roll components which are referenced to heading. The pitch component is amplified, demodulated and summed with amplified and demodulated feedback signals from the VG [vertical gyro] roll and pitch pickoffs and the pitch synchro. The combined signal is then modulated, amplified and converted to DC [direct current] to drive the platform pitch gimbal torque motor until the input signals are nulled.
