Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized (H) or vertically polarized (V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy.

La polarisation représente la mesure de l'orientation du plan d'oscillation du signal radar, déterminée par l'antenne du radar. En effet, l'antenne d'un radar peut être ajustée de façon différente à l'émission et à la réception du signal. Les radars utilisés en télédétection sont habituellement conçus pour transmettre un signal polarisé soit horizontalement, soit verticalement. De même, le radar peut recevoir un signal polarisé dans le plan horizontal, dans le plan vertical ou encore dans les deux plans. On désigne habituellement le plan horizontal par la lettre H et le plan vertical par la lettre V. Une image radar peut donc représenter un signal HH (transmission horizontale, réception horizontale), VV (transmission verticale, réception verticale), HV (transmission horizontale, réception verticale) ou vice versa.

RADARSAT-2 est conçu pour transmettre alternativement un signal H et un signal V de même que pour recevoir simultanément ces signaux, créant ainsi des données polarimétriques. Cette particularité permet au capteur de générer des images dans une variété de polarisations (HH, VV, HV et VH). Les données radars en polarisation parallèle ou croisée présentent des caractéristiques spécifiques liées aux propriétés des surfaces observées. Wind speed is the measurement of the wind blowing toward your observation station. It is measured using a wind instrument such as an anemometer or visual observation using the Beaufort scale. The speed of the wind is recorded on your station model by adding hash marks and pennants at the end of the shaft you used to record the wind direction. The term reinforcing is used basically to mean tension or membrane reinforcing, that is, the ability to distribute a concentrated load over a larger area of the subgrade, thus avoiding local overloading of the bearing capacity. A closer analysis of the reinforcing function of a geotextile laid between the base course and the subgrade, reveals that in addition to membrane reinforcing there is a second phenomenon which improves the load bearing capacity of the structure by providing horizontal reinforcing or lateral restraint. Because of this the geotextile works against horizontal deformation where it is in contact with the base and subgrade.

La diversité d'emploi des géotextiles dans les ouvrages de génie civil montre que ces derniers sont en mesure d'assurer plusieurs fonctions non seulement durant la phase de fonctionnement de l'ouvrage, mais également pendant la phase de construction. On recense deux rôles majeurs : le rôle hydraulique, le rôle mécanique (...) Dans le rôle mécanique, on citera : la fonction séparation (...), la fonction protection (...), la fonction renforcement, envisagée comme une armature, qui confère au milieu environnant une résistance en traction.

Action de support ou d'armature (...) Le principe de renforcement des sols est bien connu. Le remblai renforcé avec les nappes de géotextiles en est un exemple. Le géotextile, dans ce cas, améliore les caractéristiques mécaniques du matériau de remblai. Le géotextile placé en base d'un remblai construit sur le sol mou renforce ce dernier, reprend des tractions que le sol ne pourrait reprendre et intersecte le cercle de glissement empêchant ainsi celui-ci de se produire.
