A medium turn radius well has at least one section with a build rate angle of between 6° and 20° per 100 ft in the rotary mode, and as much as 35° per 100 ft in an oriented mode, in reaching horizontal. The radius of curvature ranges from about 160 up to 1000 feet.

Medium-radius wells are appropriate for areas that could benefit from horizontal drilling, but where long-radius methods are either unnecessary or impractical, as would be the case when lease boundary restrictions limit the well course. They are particularly applicable for re-entry wells, reef reservoirs, fractured reservoirs and reservoirs with potential for gas or water coning.

Based on curvature rate, the most commonly used classification for types of horizontal wells are as follows: ultra-short radius, short radius, medium radius and long radius.

In 1962 a fundamentally new mode of gas motion in the solar atmosphere was discovered(...). This mode was most visible as a horizontal motion organized in large cells with the gas velocity directed outward from the center of each cell at about 0. 5 km/sec.(...) The mission shall include a mode of operation that will allow a 250-500 km swath to be imaged continuously with a spatial resolution of at least 100 m. This mode must be a dual-polarization (HH/VV) mode.

RADARSAT-2 will be capable of transmitting horizontal(H) and vertical(V) polarizations and, depending on the selected mode, the sensor will receive either H or V signals or both of the signals simultaneously. Therefore, in addition to providing complete RADARSAT-1 continuity, RADARSAT-2 will generate products with VV polarization, cross-polarization(HV or VH), dual-polarization(HH+HV or VV+VH) or quad-polarization(HH+VV+HV+VH) over a range of spatial resolutions. This will allow the end-users to select the combination that is best for their specific application.

Ceci permettra aux utilisateurs de choisir la meilleure combinaison possible afin de répondre adéquatement à leurs besoins. Chaque signal reçu par le capteur (HH, VV, HV ou VH) possède une sensibilité particulière à diverses caractéristiques ou propriétés de surface, ce qui améliore la discrimination entre les surfaces. De plus, les données multi-polarisées peuvent être utilisées pour générer les signatures polarimétriques des éléments de surface; une information importante pour la caractérisation des mécanismes de rétrodiffusion du signal radar. RADARSAT-2, Canada's next generation earth observation satellite, is co-funded by the Canadian Space Agency(CSA) and MacDonald Dettwiler... The imaging sensor on the satellite is a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) capable of operating in a wide variety of imaging modes. All imaging modes of the current RADARSAT-1 satellite will be provided, as well as some new modes that incorporate important innovations and improvements. The horizontal co-polarization(HH) of RADARSAT-1 will be supplemented by options for vertical co-polarization(VV) and cross-polarization(HV or VH), and there will be new Quad-Polarization modes providing fully polarimetric data sets. The other major new mode is referred to as Ultra-Fine, providing swath imaging with resolution of about 3 m in each dimension. Re-visit times will be reduced since all imaging modes will be available either to the left or right sides of the satellite track.

Les systèmes embarqués à bord des satellites comportent de multiples instruments dont les fonctions sont variées. Toutefois, pour une mission donnée, les instruments de la charge utile ont des fonctions bien particulières. Il s'agit le plus souvent de capteurs qui ont pour vocation d'effectuer des mesures du rayonnement émis ou rémis par la Terre, l'atmosphère ou divers objets de l'Univers, ou bien de dispositifs de réception et de réémission de signaux, quand il s'agit de missions de télécommunications, par exemple. Deux grandes familles de capteurs sont identifiables : les capteurs non-imageurs et les capteurs-imageurs, ces derniers restituant sous forme d'images les observations effectuées dans un champ donné. Les principales caractéristiques d'un capteur-imageur sont : - le champ d'observation total (de quelques dizaines à quelques millions de km) [;] - la résolution spatiale (qui exprime son aptitude à distinguer les détails dans le champ total d'observation) [;] - les bandes spectrales (domaines de sensibilité spectrale des détecteurs et de leurs accessoires (filtres...] [;] - la résolution radiométrique (qui caractérise l'aptitude des détecteurs à distinguer des signaux porteurs de plus ou moins d'énergie).

Envisat's ASAR [Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar] instrument is the first permanent spaceborne radar to incorporate dual-polarisation capabilities-the instrument can transmit and receive signals in either horizontal or vertical polarisation. This Alternating Polarisation(AP) mode can improve the capability of a SAR instrument to classify different types of terrain. Because the reflective properties of a surface are dependant on the polarisation of the incoming radar signal, the use of more than one type of polarisation provides valuable extra information. The ASAR AP mode provides two simultaneous images(or channels) of the same scene taken with different radar polarisation options. Since the radar can transmit and receive in both the horizontal(H) and vertical(V) polarisations, researchers can create image pairs, with possible combinations, HH&VV... HH&HV and VV&VH. A cross-polarisation option employs a channel in which the polarisation signal transmitted by the spacecraft is received on a different polarisation, i. e. transmitted using a horizontal polarisation and received on the vertical for an HV combination, or the reverse for a VH combination.

The calculations for the ISS [International Space Station] quasi-steady acceleration environment can be compared to a set of formal design requirements which state that 50 percent of the ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] locations within the U. S. Lab, Columbus and the JEM must have quasi-steady accelerations below 1 ug for periods of 30 continuous days a total of 6 times per year. The operation of the Station in Microgravity Mode is designed to produce these 30 day intervals. The quasi-steady acceleration vector has an additional directional stability requirement stating that the component perpendicular to the vector's orbital average must be less than or equal to 0. 2 [mu] g. To meet this requirement the Station's attitude must be controlled during orbit so that it maintains a constant position relative to the LVLH [Local Vertical/Local Horizontal] axes.

The quasi-steady state acceleration level is determined primarily by the combined effects of atmospheric drag (due to the finite residual Earth’s atmosphere at the orbital altitude of the ISS), and gravity gradient stabilisation of the ISS. Gravity gradient stabilisation uses the principle that a body in orbit around the Earth will tend to rotate about it’s centre of mass, as each part of the body will tend to follow it’s own orbit. It will normally oscillate about a mean orientation, but will eventually remain in a stable orientation with respect to the Earth. The normal orientation for the ISS is the Torque Equilibrium Attitude discussed earlier. The resultant combination of atmospheric drag, gravity gradient and other secondary effects produce a set of gravity contours (i.e., locations of equal gravity level) which define the quasi-steady state microgravity environment of the ISS.

The horizontal belt washer... resembles the fourdrinier section of a paper machine. The pulp suspension is distributed from a headbox onto a traveling filter belt(e. g., plastic screen or steel band), and formed into a mat. Wash liquor is applied to the top side of the mat while displaced filtrate is removed from the underside of the belt by suction boxes. The washer is operated in a countercurrent mode, with the filtrate from one section being returned as wash liquor to the previous section, and ultimately as dilution for the headbox furnish. In common with the vacuum washer, displacement is the principal washing mechanism, but no mixing and reforming of the pulp mat is required between stages. A total of five displacement stages are easily accommodated along the belt.
