Un troisième traitement, d'ordre radiométrique, consiste à supprimer ce que les spécialistes appellent parfois «l'effet pyjama». Le système de prise de vues d'un satellite d'observation est, en effet, constitué de milliers de petits détecteurs disposés en rangés parallèles. Comme tout matériel de ce niveau de sensibilité, les détecteurs ne vieillissent pas tous de la même manière. Au bout d'un certain temps de vie, on constate dans les prises de vue des variations de contraste entre les différentes zones du cliché, avec une alternance de bandes plus sombres et plus claires. Il faut retravailler l'image pour obtenir un contraste uniforme ce qui permet de rendre invisibles les limites entre les images et donne l'impression à l'observateur de ne voir qu'une seule et même image alors qu'il est en possession d'une multitude de clichés d'images brutes assemblés.

Free balloon whose path while moving upwards is visually observed in order to measure upper winds.

CONT

One expedient method for determining the winds aloft entails the launching and tracking of a pilot balloon, also known as a pibal. The name for these balloons that do not carry instruments apparently came from their use during the 19th century when they were launched prior to manned balloon ascents to help guide or "pilot" the manned balloons. The brightly colored helium filled balloon rises at a known ascent rate. However, the balloon is carried horizontally with the wind. Since the assumption is made that the balloon serves as a tracer of the wind, the horizontal motion of the balloon over measured time intervals can be used to determine the wind speed. An observer visually tracks the motion of the balloon with an instrument called a theodolite and records the elevation and azimuth angles at timed intervals. The sequence of observed elevation and azimuth information are plotted on a plotting board to obtain the balloon motion. The wind speed and direction at each selected level are determined. Wind observations may be limited by low cloud ceilings that obscure the balloon.

The main principles of wind-driven ocean circulation are as follows. 1. Wind stress causes transport of water in a thin Ekman surface layer. 2. If there is a curl to the wind stress, the Ekman layer transport will converge or diverge, causing downwelling or upwelling. 3. The downwelling or upwelling motions cause fluid columns to squash or stretch vertically, and this causes slow southward or northward flow due to conservation of potential vorticity. 4. The southward or northward flow is determined by the Sverdrup relationship, which links the N-S transport of water with the curl of the wind stress. In order to conserve mass, the water returns to its original position via a relatively thin boundary layer adjacent to the western edge of the basin.

The mirror nephoscope consists essentially of a horizontal disk of black glass engraved with concentric circles. A vertical pointer adjustable to various known heights is mounted on the rim of the instrument. Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb.

Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope.

Actuellement on fabrique surtout des aérothermes à soufflage horizontal; l'axe du jet d'air est situé à 3 ou 4 m de hauteur et sa portée peut atteindre 60 m avec des vitesses de soufflage de l'ordre de 15 m/s. L'utilisation des aérothermes avec de telles portées du jet d'air nécessite que ce jet ne rencontre aucun obstacle sur lequel il soit susceptible de se réfléchir, ce qui implique des locaux bien dégagés et hauts de plafond. Moyennant cette condition, on peut obtenir un chauffage régulier d'un local au moyen d'aérothermes en très petit nombre : les aérothermes à soufflage horizontal peuvent très bien avoir des puissances de plusieurs centaines de milliers de kilocalories. C'est un mode de chauffage convenant bien à des ateliers, garages, halls industriels suffisamment dégagés.
