A horizontal support element to which fence boards or pickets are attached.

CONT

Rails are the horizontal part of a fence that hold the pickets or panels in place. Many vinyl fences have two rails, one at the top and one at the bottom. However, it's not uncommon to see... fences with three rails : top, bottom, and center. The distance between the rails is known as the rail spacing.

Placing white space between the characters of individual words in order to create a justified (even left- and right-hand margins) column of text.

Although technically speaking, character spacing can be either vertical or horizontal, it is usually horizontal. When the type is unspecified, which is often the case, horizontal spacing is implied.

Some systems have very sophisticated schemes, with spacing assigned according to character width (even with non-proportionally-spaced fonts), creating a print-like appearance.

Embeds format information with text. The format statement may include such parameters as margin and tab settings, decimal tab settings, centering instructions, paragraph indentations, line spacing, pitch size, etc. Some systems have an automatic or default format which is used whenever the operator fails to specify a format. Some systems allow only one format per document or per page. Other systems allow the operator to change formats and automatically call up various formats as desired. Some systems employ a Format Menu or list instead of a format statement for the document. This is generally stored separately and displayed separately from the document itself.
