The principle of web formation on a cylinder former is virtually identical to that of a gravity decker.... A horizontal cylinder with a wire or plastic cloth surface rotates in a vat of dilute paper stock. Water associated with the stock drains through the mold and a layer of fibers is deposited on the cloth.... Because the mold rotates opposite to the direction of stock flow, a portion of deposited stock is continuously washed off the mold, resulting in flocced fiber bundles that contribute to "blotchy" formation. Air Float Dryer.... principle of operation.... The pulp web is carried in a number of passes through a chamber in which heated air is used both for drying and for supporting the web. Capital and operating costs are similar to the steam cylinder system, but most pulp producers favor the air float dryer because it is easier to operate and maintain. In the earlier models of the air dryer, the pulp web is carried on mechanical conveyors and hot air is blown between the passes. The later designs incorporate true air impingement above and below the web; this principle provides much higher evaporation rates and eliminates the mechanical conveyor. Mushroom arm cutter. Another special type of arm was the mushroom arm... This consisted of a standard jib with a vertical tree or turrett mounted near its end. The turret was fitted with teeth and rotated about its axis. It was driven by the cutting chain on the main jib. The mushroom device was designed to fit on to any standard-type chain coal-cutter and, like the curved jib, it allowed the operator to make a shear cut at the back of the web at the same time as the horizontal cut was being made.
