The National Olympic Committees(NOCs) promote the fundamental principles of Olympism at a national level within the framework of sports. NOCs are committed to the development of athletes and support the development of sport for all programs and high performance sport in their countries. They also participate in the training of sports administrators by organizing educational programs. Another objective of the National Olympic Committees is to ensure that athletes from their respective nations attend the Olympic Games. Only a NOC is able to select and send teams and competitors for participation in the Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees also supervise the preliminary selection of potential bid cities. Before a candidate city can compete against those in other countries, it first must win the selection process by the NOC in its own country. The National Olympic Committee can then name that city to the IOC as a candidate to host the Olympic Games.

Le Comité National Olympique peut ensuite indiquer au CIO le nom de la ville choisie, en tant que ville candidate susceptible d'accueillir les Jeux Olympiques.

The common smut of Indian corn caused by a fungus (Ustilago maydis) and characterized by grayish white swellings that rupture to expose a black spore mass.

Like other smut diseases, common smut of corn derives its name from the sooty masses of teliospores found on infected host plants... The most obvious symptoms are tumor-like galls that vary in size from less than 1 cm to more than 30 cm(0. 4-12 inch) in diameter. All meristematic tissues are susceptible to infection. Galls are found most frequently on ears, tassels, stalks, nodal shoots, and mid-ribs of leaves... Even though galls may form on many above-ground parts of the plant, infection is local(i. e., the host is not colonized systemically). Occasionally, galls develop beneath the soil surface when the apical meristem of a young plant is infected.

Although Ustilago maydis occurs throughout the world where corn is grown, the occurrence of common smut is localized in Australia where the disease is known as "maize boil smut".

The City of Victoria Commonwealth Games Society was incorporated 11 May 1987. The name was changed by special resolution on 13 December 1988 to the Victoria Commonwealth Games Society(VCGS). Before incorporation the society was known informally as the Victoria Committee to Host the 1994 Commonwealth Games and the Greater Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games Association. The society was dissolved in 1996.

Begun in 1995 by the National Capital Commission(NCC) under the general name of the Family Exchange Program, the objectives of the Celebrate Canada in the Capitals program are to foster a feeling of pride in Canada and to encourage Canadians to explore the rich culture and heritage of their country. In the beginning, the program enabled one randomly chosen family from each province and territory to visit Canada's Capital Region for five days during Winterlude, and twelve other families to travel to the Capital for Canada Day. During their stay, the winners were billeted with host families in the region, which added a friendly dimension to the program while giving participants a more connected exchange experience.

The Coal Bowl Classic is a national invitational boy's high school basketball tournament held at Breton Education Center in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada. A major facilitating factor is that all team members will be housed within one wing of the school. Breton Education Center is a junior-senior high school which opened in 1970. Interestingly, the host Breton Education Center Bears have yet to win the tournament championship. The tournament takes its name from the primary industry of New Waterford, coal mining.

The name for letters given to an ambassador by his chief of state, and addressed to the chief of state of his host country.

[The letters] are delivered to the latter by ambassadors in a formal credentials ceremony, which generally takes place shortly after his arrival at a new post. Until this ceremony has taken place he is not formally recognized by the host country, and he cannot officially act as ambassador. The letters are termed "letters of credence" because they request the receiving chief of state to give "full credence" to what the ambassador will say on behalf of his government.
