The preliminary mechanical processing of the dried [hemp] stalks involves some fairly vigorous handling of the raw material, including breaking, scutching and the separation of the line fibres from the tow and other by-products. The stronger, more solid fibre bundles keep their original lengths and parallelism. During breaking and scutching the weaker and shorter fibres(tow), especially those at the foot of the stalks, break away and are removed together with the hurds, dust, soil, etc.... The hurds are removed pneumatically and may be sold for use as natural fertiliser, for the heat insulation of buildings, as fuel or as animal litter... The hemp tow is then passed through a conveyer drier that can use either hot or cold air.

Tin is a metal which can combine with other chemicals to form compounds. When tin is combined with chemicals such as chlorine, sulfur, or oxygen, it is called an inorganic tin compound. Inorganic tin compounds are found in small amounts in the earth’s crust. They are present in toothpaste, perfumes, soaps, coloring agents, and dyes. Tin can also combine with carbon-containing materials to form organotin compounds. There can be tin metal, as well as inorganic and organic tin compounds in the air, water, and soil near places where they are naturally present in the rocks, mined, manufactured, or used.

Venting. When the hot plastic is injected into the mold it displaces air. In a well-built, properly clamped mold without vents, the injection material may compress the air. The heat of compression might burn the material. The force of the compression might open the mold, causing flash. The resistance of the compressed air might prevent the mold from completely filling. These problems are alleviated by used of vents, which are usually ground on the parting line. Their size depends on the nature of the material and the size of the cavity.

An exception to the pressing methods discussed previously occurs in the semi-dry hardboard plants. Mats are formed at moisture contents of about 25 to 30%(oven-dry basis). Screens similar to those used in the wet-process line are used to transport the mats. During hot pressing, these screens allow rapid venting of the moisture from the mat. The bottom surface of the pressed board has a screen impression, termed "screen-back", like that found on wet-process hardboards. Only relatively thin boards can be made with this type of pressing.

The reasons why water hammer, which can be so troublesome if water is present in a steam line or if steam is present in a hot water line, is apparently absent from pipes transmitting very wet mixtures is rather obscure : it may have something to do with the annular flow of the water, clinging to the pipe walls, rather than with "rivulet" flow when smaller quantities of water are present in a steam line.
