Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Seismic Monitoring of "Hot" and "Cold" Heavy Oil Production.... The application of seismic monitoring for "cold flow" mapping is even more challenging. In "cold flow" heavy oil production of oil sands, we see the development of high porosity zones known as "wormholes". These high porosity zones are much smaller than a seismic wavelength so their detection will be extremely difficult. Nevertheless, it is interesting to speculate whether time-lapse seismology has a role to play in the reservoir characterization of "cold flow" as well as in steam injection.... In addition to the production of heavy oil from the steam injection in Pikes Peak field, there is production from "cold flow" heavy oil fields in the surrounding areas. Explication : Des réservoirs d'huiles lourdes sont produits au Canada par simple pompage à l'aide de pompes à cavité progressive («PCP pumps») qui permettent de produire du sable en même temps que l'huile. La production du sable provoquerait in-situ des chenaux de fortes perméabilités («wormholes»), ce qui éviterait d'injecter de la vapeur pour produire ce type de réservoir. Le conditionnel est utilisé ici car pour l'instant il n'y a pas de preuve directe de l'existence de ces chenaux. Cependant, il y a de fortes présomptions qu'ils existent sinon on ne pourrait pas expliquer certaines observations faites sur champ, comme par exemple l'arrivée, en quelques minutes, de boue de forage dans un puits situé à plusieurs centaines de mètres d'un puits en cours de forage.
