A built-up roofing consists of plies or layers of roofing felt bonded together on site with hot bitumen. A protective surface coating of gravel or slag is sometimes embedded in a heavy top coating of hot bitumen. It is laid down to conform to the roof deck, and to protect all angles formed by the roof deck with projecting surfaces, and forms a single-unit flexible waterproofed membrane fastened to the deck by cementing and nailing. The simple principle on flat roofs is to turn the membrane up to form a skirting or base flashing on the vertical surfaces, making a large watertight tray. The only outlets from this tray are the roof drains to dispose of water.

On applique parfois une surface protectrice de gravier ou de laitier noyée dans une épaisse couche de bitume. La couverture multicouches épouse la forme du toit, elle protège tous les angles et projections. Elle forme une membrane imperméable, compacte, souple, fixée au support par collage et clouage. Sur les toits plats, il suffit de prolonger la membrane le long des saillies verticales pour obtenir un solin de base, formant un grand plateau imperméable. Les seuls orifices de ce plateau sont les drains d'évacuation de l'eau.

Le bitume est un terme générique décrivant les mélanges naturels de carbures d'hydrogène se présentant sous une forme visqueuse ou solide; dans l'industrie de la toiture le mot bitume signifie soit de l'asphalte soit du brai de goudron. À l'état solide ces matériaux se ressemblent mais leurs caractéristiques sont quelque peu différentes. La plupart de l'asphalte employé au Canada pour imprégner ou imperméabiliser les matériaux de couverture ou les toitures en terrasse provient de la distillation du pétrole suivie d'un certain raffinage lequel permet d'obtenir les propriétés que l'on désire. On trouve également des dépôts solides d'asphalte à l'état naturel dans certaines parties du monde. On obtient le brai de goudron en distillant des goudrons grossiers provenant de la carbonisation de la houille. La propriété qu'a le brai de goudron de couler à froid facilite le bouchage automatique des fissures mais elle empêche qu'on l'utilise sur des toits trop en pente. Sur les toits à faible pente on peut employer des asphaltes dont le point de fusion n'est pas élevé tandis que sur les toits à pente raide on peut employer des asphaltes dont le point de fusion est élevé. C'est pourquoi l'asphalte a davantage d'applications que le brai de goudron.

The XB-25E was a standard production modified for anti-icing research. The carburetor air intake duct was faired internally into the top of the cowling and an anti-icing air intake was mounted at the bottom. Each row of cylinders exhausted through a separate exchanger, one ported outboard and one inboard of each nacelle. Ram air from the lower cowling duct was routed underneath the engine to a split duct, each side of which was directed to one of the heat exchangers. Air admitted to these heat exchangers was directed through a series of gates that allowed diversion of heated air either to the anti-icing system or out the exhaust. A complex system of ducting led the hot air to the outer wing leading edges and also into the fuselage and to the leading edges of the tail. It was intended that the temperature of the hot air would be sufficiently high that ice on the wing leading edges surfaces would be vaporized rather than melted, which would have prevented water from flowing aft and then freezing again on flaps and ailerons.

A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section.

The heat collector is a flat plate of blackened metal(steel, aluminum, or copper), to which tubes are attached in any manner which provides good thermal contact. Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process.

A sparge arm is another worthwhile brewery option. Although it does not actually save time, it does decrease the amount of effort you must spend pouring sparge water into the lauter tun. A sparge arm can be purchased ready-made, improvised from a shower head, or fabricated at home. One simple design is a perforated copper loop that lies on top of the grain in the lauter tun. It is connected to the hot liquor tank by food-grade tubing, and you control the flow of water from the hot liquor tank using a ball valve. Water is run through the copper loop onto the grain bed at a rate about equal to the rate of wort leaving the tun.

The air flows in the bottom hole, and the aerodynamics of the can suck the exhaust out of the top holes. This forms a vicious through draught, and the fire burns almost white hot in a strong wind! It also uses very little fuel. Fire temperature can be controlled by turning can away from the wind a bit, or by obstructing the inlet hole.

Component of mixing plant in which materials are mixed together.

Two types of plants are used to make hot mix asphalt concrete, the batch type mixing plant and the drum mix plant A batch plant mixes, then drops individual batches of hot mix asphalt concrete and a drum mix plant is a continuous flow type of production plant. In a batch type mixing plant different sizes of aggregates are drawn from a multi-bin cold feed system into an enclosed counter flow rotary drum. After the aggregate is dried, it is lifted to the top of the batching tower and on to a screen system which separates the aggregate into different sizes and then drops the different sizes into individual bins. Aggregate is then drawn from the hot bins in predetermined amounts, weighed and dropped into a pug mill mixer with the correct amount of liquid asphalt. The batch is mixed, then dropped into a waiting truck or sent to a surge bin until trucks arrive. In a drum mix plant a metered, four compartment, cold feed bin system supplies the exact amount of the required size of aggregates to the rotating drum mixer The drum mixer is an inclined, parallel flow dryer/mixer in which the aggregate is dried and heated in the upper section of the drum, then mixed with liquid in the lower part of the drum. From the drum the hot mix is discharged into a hot elevator which lifts the finished product to a surge hopper or storage silo both equipped to load trucks.

Capital and operating costs are similar to the steam cylinder system, but most pulp producers favor the air float dryer because it is easier to operate and maintain. In the earlier models of the air dryer, the pulp web is carried on mechanical conveyors and hot air is blown between the passes. The later designs incorporate true air impingement above and below the web; this principle provides much higher evaporation rates and eliminates the mechanical conveyor. In this process, powder is held in a container having an open top and a porous bottom through which an upward flow of air causes the powder mass to levitate or "fluidize". Charging electrodes near the surface impart an electrical charge to the powder. Electrically grounded workpieces pass over the surface of the bed and collect a coating of powder. The coating is then cured in a baking oven. There are techniques for applying dry powder coatings without the use of electrostatics.... These processes typically involve preheating the workpiece to a temperature substantially above the melting point of the powder and then applying the powder, either by dipping the workpiece into a fluidized bed or by spraying air-suspended powder directly onto the hot surface of the workpiece. The powder melts immediately upon contact and flows to form a film, which is subsequently cured in a bake oven.
