La polysensibilité aux substances chimiques (PSC) recouvre divers symptômes inexpliqués (céphalées, difficultés respiratoires, épuisement, myalgies, [éruptions cutanées, problèmes du système nerveux central, troubles gastro-intestinaux, irritations des yeux, du nez et de la gorge] et troubles cognitifs) attribués à une exposition à des concentrations très faibles de produits non apparentés.

Le diagnostic : «multiple chemical sensitivity» ou «MCS» (allergie aux produits chimiques multiples) est utilisé pour étiqueter les personnes présentant une foule de symptômes [...] attribués à des éléments de l'environnement. [...] Le concept du MCS a été développé par un allergiste du nom de Theron G. Randolph, M.D. (1906-1995), qui était convaincu que des patients devenaient malades suite à l'exposition à des substances à doses beaucoup plus faibles que celles considérées sans dangers. Dans les années 40, il déclara que les allergies causaient la fatigue, l'irritabilité, des troubles de comportement, de la dépression, de la confusion, et de la tension nerveuse chez les enfants. Dans les années 50, Randolph suggérait que les humains ne se sont pas adaptés suffisamment à des produits chimiques synthétiques modernes ce qui s'est traduit par une nouvelle forme de sensibilité à ces substances. Sa préoccupation qu'il avait déjà avec les aliments s'est étendue aussi à un grand nombre de substances chimiques. Avec les années, la condition [...] a été appelée par plusieurs noms : la toxémie allergique, l'allergie cérébrale, la sensibilité chimique, la maladie écologique, la maladie environnementale, [le] dérèglement du système immunitaire, [la] sensibilité chimique multiple, [le] syndrome allergique total, [l']allergie environnementale totale, [le] syndrome de trouble immunologique total, [le] syndrome de réponse toxique, la maladie du 20e siècle, l'allergie universelle, et plusieurs autres noms qui suggèrent une variété de facteurs comme causes. [NOTA Ces noms ne sont pas de parfaits synonymes mais des descriptions de la maladie selon différentes perspectives, la sensibilité (ou hypersensibilité) étant la cause, et la maladie, l'effet.] Ces étiquettes sont aussi liées au syndrome de la Guerre du Golfe, [à] la maladie des tours à bureaux scellés [sic], [au] syndrome de tapis toxique, et [à] d'autres diagnostics [sic : diagnostics] très controversés.

Since polar substances have strong attraction for one another and since water is highly polar, the polar adsorbents mentioned above retain water in preference to most other fluids and are, therefore, incapable of adsorbing non-aqueous gases efficiently from a humid atmosphere. For use in air conservation, however, which requires a sorbent to extract very small quantities of a very numerous variety of gases and vapors from either dry or humid air during a very brief interval of contact, non-polar adsorbents such as specially processed carbon of high activity, dense structure and extreme relative hardness have been found to be adequate.
