Stratification et couche intermédiaire froide. L'océan se stratifie, car les couches d'eau affichant des densités différentes rendent plus difficile le mélange dans la colonne d'eau [...] Durant l'automne et l'hiver, le refroidissement et le vent causent des mélanges et une homogénéisation des couches supérieures de l'océan. Au printemps et en été, les eaux superficielles deviennent moins denses en raison du réchauffement et de l'apport d'eau douce accru provenant de la fonte des glaces et du ruissellement sur les terres. Cette eau moins dense ne se mélange pas facilement aux eaux profondes plus denses et plus froides, ce qui mène à la stratification. A Conference, convened in Athens in 1974, adopted the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 1974. The Convention is designed to consolidate and harmonize two earlier Brussels conventions dealing with passengers and luggage and adopted in 1961 and 1967 respectively. The Convention establishes a regime of liability for damage suffered by passengers carried on a seagoing vessel.
