La Division du contrôle des maladies transmissibles (DCMT) de la Direction des soins de santé primaires et de la santé publique (DSSPSP) a été dotée en personnel en avril 2003 pour canaliser les efforts vers les maladies transmissibles, notamment la tuberculose, l'infection à VIH/le sida et les maladies évitables par la vaccination. Cette division continuera de se développer pour mieux réagir à d'autres maladies transmissibles, comme l'hépatite C, les maladies transmises sexuellement, les entéropathies et les autres maladies émergentes au sein des collectivités des Premières nations et des Inuits. La DCMT est chargée des responsabilités suivantes : assurer la coordination nationale des programmes actuels de lutte contre les maladies transmissibles : maladies transmises par l'air (Stratégie d'élimination de la tuberculose) urgences sanitaires liées aux maladies transmissibles (grippe pandémique) maladies transmises par le sang et infections transmises sexuellement (Programme VIH et sida) maladies évitables par la vaccination (Stratégie d'immunisation ciblée) rassembler les ressources humaines et les compétences nécessaires pour s'attaquer aux autres questions liées aux maladies transmissibles. soutenir les régions dans la mise en œuvre des programmes. Depuis 2003, la Division du contrôle des maladies transmissibles de la Direction générale de la santé des Premières nations et des Inuits (DGSPNI) a commandé des analyses indépendantes et a mené des examens internes des besoins et des capacités en matière de santé publique de la DGSPNI et des populations qu'elle sert.
