Les filières vont amenuiser les tiges [de métal] à la grosseur voulue et certaines serviront à l'artisan pour forger tous ces clous à tête écrasée qu'on retrouve dans nos plus vieilles charpentes ou dans les meubles anciens. A line used to indicate the direction of a field, especially an electric or magnetic field, at various points in space. The tangent of a line of force at each point indicates the orientation of the field at that point. Arrows are usually used to indicate the direction of the force.

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. More precisely, the tangent line to the path at each point is required to be parallel to the vector field at that point. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. Perhaps the most familiar example of a vector field described by field lines is the magnetic field, which is often depicted using field lines emanating from a magnet.

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun.

Le champ magnétique terrestre trouve son origine au centre de la Terre où les mouvements rapides du magma riche en fer et en nickel transforment la Terre en un immense aimant. Les variations dues à des courants électriques dans la partie ionisée de l'atmosphère (l'ionosphère) sont elles quotidiennes et plus ou moins périodiques. Le champ magnétique peut également varier rapidement lorsque la magnétosphère est perturbée par des changements dans l'activité solaire (orage magnétique). Ces perturbations de notre cavité protectrice sont irrégulières et imprévisibles [...]

Blocking knife.... The blade is forged to an iron bar varying in length from 1 to 4 ft. This bar has a hook at one end, and a handle, often T-shaped, at the other. The hook engages with an eye-bolt fixed to a bench or stool to form a hinge. In operation, one hand holds the wood to be shaped, while the other, by moving the knife up and down, pares away the unwanted wood, using the bar as a lever. The longer [size]... is used by cloggers, brush, and by boot-last and boot-tree makers; the smaller sizes are used for shaping rake tines, tent pegs, wooden spoons, etc.
