Since its creation, October 17th has been a day for those living in extreme poverty to speak out and for all citizens to consider how they can contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty.

The ABPV may infect both adult bees and brood when the colony is infested by a parasitic mite that may serve as a vector in transmitting the virus from severely infected to healthy bees.

The 12-hour clock is a time conversion convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods called “ante meridiem”(“a. m., ” English :"before mid day") and “post meridiem”(“p. m., ” English :"after mid day"). Each period consists of 12 hours numbered : 12(acting as zero), 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. … Confusion at noon and midnight.... The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, states : To avoid confusion, the correct designation for twelve o’clock is 12 noon or 12 midnight. Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. … In the United States, noon is often called "12 : 00 p. m. "and midnight "12 : 00 a. m. "With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system logical. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language(Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic :"Strictly speaking, 12 a. m. denotes midnight, and 12 p. m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required. "Many U. S. style guides(including the NIST website) recommend that it is clearest if one refers to "noon" or "12 : 00 noon" and "midnight" or "12 : 00 midnight"(rather than to "12 : 00 p. m. "and "12 : 00 a. m. ", respectively). … The use of "12 : 00 midnight" or "midnight" is still problematic because it does not distinguish between the midnight at the start of a particular day and the midnight at its end. To avoid confusion and error, some U. S. style guides recommend either clarifying "midnight" with other context clues, or not referring to midnight at all. For an example of the latter method, "midnight" is replaced with "11 : 59 p. m. "for the end of a day or "12 : 01 a. m. "for the start of the next day. Liberation Day is celebrated each year on May 5 in the Netherlands to mark the end of the German occupation during the Second World War. The nation was liberated largely by Canadian troops. On May 5, 1945, the Canadian General Charles Foulkes and the German Commander-in-Chief Johannes Blaskowitz reached an oral agreement on the capitulation of Germany in Hotel De Wereld in Wageningen. One day later, the capitulation document was signed in the auditorium of the Agricultural University located next to the hotel. After the liberation in 1945 the decision was made that Liberation Day was going to be celebrated every 5 years. Only in 1990, the day was declared a national holiday, on which the liberation would be commemorated and celebrated annually.

Saint Joseph's Day, commonly called the Feast of St. Joseph or in some churches, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph is marked in some Christian churches in honor of Saint Joseph, spouse of Mary and foster-father of Jesus. It is a Solemnity in the Roman Catholic Church, and a feast or festival in the Lutheran Church, and a feast in the provinces of the Anglican Communion, falling on 19 March. In the Orthodox Church, the Feast falls on the Sunday after Christmas. Saint Bernardino of Siena was the main proponent of Joseph's veneration in the western Church, where his feast day was first celebrated in 1621. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph the patron of the Universal Church, and promoted the "Patronage" feast(later Solemnity, before the Vatican II calendar's use of such term) of Saint Joseph on the third Wednesday after Easter; this was replaced in 1955 by the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. As Joseph was a carpenter(or a builder), he is also the patron saint of workers.

In 1969, an amendment to the Parole Act led to what is today known as day parole. Under this type of parole, an offender must return to prison or a community residential centre each evening. Therefore, as day parole use grew, so did the need for centres for offender accommodation and supervision. In 1973, William Outerbridge, a professor of criminology at the University of Ottawa(who later became chairperson of the National Parole Board), conducted a study of community-based residential centres.... Following this report, the Secretariat of the Solicitor General of Canada organized a national forum on community-based residential centres. At the conclusion of this forum, the privately run Quebec centres formed the Association des membres des centres résidentiels communautaires du Québec, a move facilitated by the fact that the majority of the centres were already members of the Quebec Association of Social Rehabilitation Agencies.

Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31 December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1 January or, in many cases, 2 January. The roots of Hogmanay reach back to the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In Europe, this evolved into the ancient celebration of Saturnalia, a great Roman winter festival, where people celebrated completely free of restraint and inhibition. The Vikings celebrated Yule, which later became the Twelve Days of Christmas, or the "Daft Days" as they were sometimes called in Scotland. The winter festival went underground with the Protestant Reformation and ensuing years, but re-emerged near the end of the 17th century.

In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different feasts known as Feasts of the Cross, all of which commemorate the cross used in the crucification of Jesus. The original name of this feast was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, by which name it is still known by the Orthodox Church and the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church. Since 1970, it has been officially called the Triumph of the Cross by the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. It is also popularly known among Anglicans and Lutherans as Holy Cross Day. In Jewish folklore the feast was established by Saint Peter for converted pagans to observe instead of Rosh Hashana. The feast commemorates the finding of the True Cross in 325 during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem of St. Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, who made Christianity the state religion of the empire after having converted to the faith himself. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a part of the cross placed inside it. In 614, the part of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. The cross was returned to the church the following year after initially having been taken to Constantinople by Heraclius.

On June 15, Kingstonians will gather together with family and friends in their city to celebrate First Capital Day. On that day in Kingston in 1841, Governor General Lord Sydenham opened the first Parliament of the United Provinces of Canada. Evantually, Kingston's insufficient number of office buildings forced Parliament to move to Montreal, where it opened on November 28, 1844. Over 160 years later, both the provincial and the federal governments have officially recognized Kingston as the First Capital of Canada. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Ian Milne and Dr. Margaret Angus, the founders of First Capital Day, the occasion of Kingston's choice as Canada's first capital has been marked with much celebration for the past five years.

Agencies working for NASA use this term for a lighter-than-air aircraft designed to explore the planets. An aerobot is a helium-filled balloon fitted with heaters that are powered by solar cells. During the day, solar energy will heat the helium and give it extra buoyancy; at night, the balloon will drop to lower altitudes or even touch the ground. A limitation of the design is that its movements cannot be fully controlled, though it may have some ability to dictate its altitude, perhaps through dropping ballast, releasing gas or managing its temperature. A big advantage of this design is that it doesn’t need fuel, which is expensive to transport and which runs out all too soon. Unlike satellites, aerobots fly in the atmosphere, so allowing experiments to be carried out on its chemistry. They can also view and record the ground from much lower altitudes than is possible with satellites. NASA plans to send a device of this sort to Mars in 2003, and possibly later to Titan, Venus and Jupiter.

This machine, used in conjunction with a more gradual system of reducing wheat endosperm to flour, made it possible to remove many of the branny particles which characterized flours of the day. During the Revolutionary War, General Washington's troops stuffed the deflated paper money of the day into their stockings to help protect their shins from the chilly temperatures of the winter. From this practice arose the slang expression "shinplaster" to characterize any low-value paper currency. The low-denomination merchant's notes circulating in large quantities in British North America(particularly Lower Canada) during late 1830s were dubbed "shinplasters", as were the 25-cent paper notes issued in 1870 and later.

L'utilisation de «shinplaster» (emplâtre à tibia) vient de ce qu'à un moment de la Guerre de l'Indépendance américaine, les soldats de Washington emplirent leurs bas de billets alors dévalués pour se protéger les jambes contre le froid hivernal. Cette pratique entraîna le recours à «shinplaster» pour désigner toute monnaie de papier de petite valeur. Le terme fut repris au Canada, d'abord à la fin des années 1830, alors que de grandes quantités de billets de marchand de faible valeur circulaient en Amérique du Nord britannique, et surtout au Bas-Canada, puis à partir de 1870, avec l'émission de billets de 25 cents.
