Losee's test... is similar to the jerk test, in that the limb is moved from flexion to extension. If the left knee is being tested, the examiner stands to the left of the patient, grasps the foot with his left hand, flexes the knee to about 40° and uses his abdomen as a fulcrum to apply a valgus stress to the knee. A test for ligamentous instability of the knee performed by stabilizing the femur while placing a varus stress on the knee by adducting the leg. A moderate joint line separation with the knee fully extended indicates a tear of the lateral collateral ligament and the posterior capsule. If the test is only positive in 30 degrees of flexion, it represents an isolated lateral collateral ligament tear. Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability.
