There are two kinds of meniscal cysts. The lateral meniscus is much more often cystic than the medial and the patient, usually an adult male, presents with a characteristic lump on the outer side of the knee. The lump is hard, almost bony, often just below the joint line, and most easily seen with the knee slightly flexed.

The meniscus is a half moon shaped piece of cartilage that lies between the weight bearing joint surfaces of the femur and the tibia. It is triangular in cross section and is attached to the lining of the knee joint along its periphery. There are two menisci in a normal knee; the outside one is called the lateral meniscus, the inner one the medial meniscus.

The lateral meniscus is located on the outer side of the knee joint, and the medial meniscus is on the inner side. These two wedge-shaped discs form a cradle for the cartilage covered condyles of the femur. The minisci absorb shock, and serve to cushion the knee. An injury to a meniscus may take the form of a small or large tear, a split in the disk, or a frayed or roughly torn area.

A retrospective review of patients who underwent arthroscopic partial lateral meniscectomy for lateral meniscus tears in otherwise normal knees was conducted to review the long-term functional, clinical, and radiographic results... Our findings suggest that the functional outcome for patients undergoing partial lateral meniscectomy may deteriorate with time and it may be helpful to counsel patients concerning long-term expectations.

La préservation du capital méniscal influence directement les résultats cliniques et radiologiques dès le moyen terme des ligamentoplasties. La méniscectomie latérale est plus péjorative sur le résultat fonctionnel que la méniscectomie médiale. Mais c'est l'absence de ménisque médial qui retentit le plus sur l'évolution radiologique.

La méniscectomie externe par arthroscopie est incontestablement supérieure à celle faite par arthrotomie. En effet, elle ne modifie pas l'équilibre rotulien par agression de l'aileron externe, et elle permet une économie méniscale évidente et une résection plus précise.
