Gathering-arm loaders... are self propelled and may be mounted on rails, on crawlers, or on rubber tires. The crawler-mounted loader is the most commonly used. A machine for loading loose rock or coal. It has a tractor-mounted chassis, carrying a chain conveyor the front end of which is built into a wedge-shaped blade. Mounted on this blade are two arms, one on either side of the chain conveyor, which gather the material from the muckpile and feed it on to the loader conveyor. A belt conveyor to serve between a loader or continuous miner and the main transport. It consists of two main units-a head and a tail section-each mounted on crawler tracks and independently driven. In operation, the tail unit, i. e. the receiving end, moves forward with the loading machine, and belting is automatically released from a loop take-up. Fifty feet advance is possible before additional belting has to be inserted into the conveyor run. Joy presently offers both the chain ripper miners and the rotary drum head-type miners introduced in 1968.... The rotary drum miner... sumps into the coal face at the top of the seam. When the predetermined sumping distance is reached, the head moves downwards breaking out the coal as it progresses.
