The Canadian Institutes of Health Research(CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada(SSHRC) were pleased to announce funding offered under the Community Alliances for Health Research Program. The CAHR Program is one of several transition programs launched in October of 1999 leading to the creation of CIHR. The intent of the CAHR Program is to foster excellent research of relevance to community groups and agencies in the four themes of health research : biomedical, clinical, health services and systems and population health including the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health. The program facilitates mutual learning and collaboration among community organizations and partnerships with researchers based in local universities, hospitals and other not-for-profit institutions. IRSC (Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada) et le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH) étaient heureux d'annoncer le financement offert dans le cadre du Programme des alliances communautaires pour la recherche en santé (ACRS). Le Programme des ACRS est l'un des nombreux programmes de transition inaugurés en octobre 1999 qui ont conduit à la création des IRSC. Le but visé dans le cadre du Programme des ACRS est de favoriser des recherches de grande qualité qui seraient utiles à des groupes et organismes communautaires, dans le cadre des quatre thèmes de la recherche en santé : la recherche biomédicale, la recherche clinique, la recherche sur les services et systèmes de santé, ainsi que la recherche sur la santé des populations, incluant les déterminants sociaux, culturels et environnementaux de la santé. The New Rural Economy Project Phase 2(NRE2) is a research and education program studying rural Canada since 1998. It is a collaborative undertaking bringing together rural people, researchers, policy-analysts, the business community, and government agencies at all levels to identify and address vital rural issues. It is conducted at the national level with historical and statistical data analysis, and at the local level with case studies involving community and household surveys. Addiction Services of Thames Valley is a community based service, funded by the Provincial Ministry of Health, MOHLTC. Our agency operates in co-operation with local addiction agencies, the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health, the Thames Valley District Health Council, and many other community services. We provide early intervention to persons who are concerned about substance use and/or problem gambling; assess individuals in Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex Counties who have an alcohol and/or drug related problem or problem gambling; develop treatment plans for clients and assist with referrals to provide community treatment & aftercare; provide consultation to employers, families, professionals and others concerned about alcohol use, drug use or problem gambling; participate in the development of the addiction system; our assessment forms the basis for a comprehensive treatment plan, referrals to appropriate treatment services and aftercare subsequent to treatment; provide the Back on Track program for convicted impaired drivers in Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford counties; assist pregnant and Parenting women who are substance-involved in a new program called "Heartspace". This program focuses on both the needs of the woman and the child in an all female environment.
