The term reinforcing is used basically to mean tension or membrane reinforcing, that is, the ability to distribute a concentrated load over a larger area of the subgrade, thus avoiding local overloading of the bearing capacity. A closer analysis of the reinforcing function of a geotextile laid between the base course and the subgrade, reveals that in addition to membrane reinforcing there is a second phenomenon which improves the load bearing capacity of the structure by providing horizontal reinforcing or lateral restraint.
