It began in 1935, when the mandate of the ministère des Affaires municipales was broadened to include industry and trade, two sectors of increasing importance to the government. In 1943, the ministère de l'Industrie et du Commerce was founded. Over the years, other mandates were grafted onto its mission : technology in 1988, science in 1994, and external trade in 1996. In 1998, the science and technology mandates were entrusted to the ministère de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie, which, in its early days, was charged with devising a scientific policy to bring about a new convergence between universities, industry and government. In 1998, the ministère des Régions was created as a successor to the Secrétariat au développement des régions in order to implement the new policy to support local and regional development, with a view to promoting and assisting the development of the regions and ensuring consistent government action. On April 29, 2003, the Premier announced the creation of the ministère du Développement économique et régional(MDER) out of these four entities. The purpose of the merger was to improve intervention targeting regional businesses and stakeholders by simplifying it and making it more coherent and efficient. In April 2004, "Recherche" was added to the MDER's name. One of the most scenic trails on Little St. Simons Island also offers a unique chronology of the Island's cultural history. Old House Road follows the western side of the maritime forest and is approximately 2 miles long. The trail passes through our largest prehistoric archaeological site, a vast area of oyster shell middens that date from 700 to 1650 A. D. To participate in KIDS FROM KANATA, a teacher needs a computer and modem with access to a telephone line. Participants log in to the Canadian national computer packet network, Datapac, to gain access to the SciLink host computer in Toronto. Most cities in Canada have local phone access to Datapac. SciLink is also available via the Internet, a network of networks connecting educational institutions around the world. Participating schools are organized into triads with a wide geographic dispersion, with each triad hosted by a Native, Aboriginal or First Nations classroom. Students interactively conduct research about their other two triad members under headings such as Health, Environment, Language and Culture, History, Education, Economics, and Politics. Pour participer au programme Les enfants du Kanata, un enseignant doit avoir accès à un ordinateur doté d'un modem et à une ligne téléphonique. Les participants entrent en communication avec l'ordinateur central de SciLink, à Toronto, par le biais de Datapac, ou par le truchement d'Internet.
