Snowline ... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round - and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt.

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer(usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Factors affecting the location of the snow line are the quantity of snowfall, the steepness of the slope on which snow rests, the exposure of an area to the sun and prevailing winds, the type and velocity of the winds, and the presence or absence of large bodies of water. The level of the snow line is much lower in winter than in summer. It is also affected by distance from the equator, along which it is found at an altitude of c. 3 mi(5 km) ;in polar regions it is at sea level.

Du 8 au 11 juin se tenait à Lausanne la 16e conférence de la Société internationale pour les travaux sans tranchée (ISTT - Int. Society for Trenchless Technology). Sous cette appellation se cachent toutes les techniques qui permettent la mise en place ou la réparation de conduites souterraines les plus diverses sans intervenir depuis la surface, donc sans réaliser de fouilles. Dans l'espace densément construit qui est le nôtre, elles présentent donc de multiples avantages. Elles comprennent les forages dirigés, les micro-tunneliers, les pousse-tubes et les diverses méthodes de rénovation interne des conduites. En dehors des aspects technologiques, deux éléments de réflexion ont retenu mon attention pendant cette conférence. Tout d'abord, s'il est montré que les coûts de ces nouvelles techniques deviennent compétitifs par rapport aux solutions classiques en tranchée, il s'avère qu'une prise en compte des coûts sociaux dans la comparaison de variantes favoriserait systématiquement la technologie sans tranchée.

Experience has shown that rotor blades, whether metal or plastic, behave like mirrors in terms of reflecting electromagnetic radiation. In other words, a blade will only give a usable return to the transmitter location if it is perpendicular to line connecting blade and transmitter. At the receiver, a series of return pulses can be detected, each corresponding to the passage of a blade. By analogy with the illumination of a rotating mirror, this pulsed return pattern is known as "blade flash".

La détection repose entièrement sur les échos renvoyés par les pales du rotor principal qui, eux, présentent un effet Doppler important. L'expérience a montré que les pales, métalliques ou plastiques, se comportent vis-à-vis du rayonnement électromagnétique comme des miroirs. En d'autres termes, elles ne réfléchissent l'émission radar que si elles sont perpendiculaires à celle-ci. A la réception, on enregistre donc une série de retours de caractères impulsionnels, chacun correspondant au passage d'une pale. Par analogie avec l'illumination d'un miroir tournant, on appelle "éclairs de pale" ces retours impulsionnels.
