When hard braking is applied for slowing down or stopping after an aborted takeoff or emergency stop situation, the tire is locked up and can’t rotate, causing rapid heat buildup. When the tire begins to smoke, rubber debris build up under the tire. As the skid continues, more and more debris cause a barrier to form against the water, preventing it from escaping past the tire. A seal has now been created... heating the water under the tire to a point where steam exists. The steam is strong enough to support the tire and prevent runway contact. Should the skid continue, the tire enters reverted rubber state as more heat, steam and rubber debris continue the process.

Custom ski leg with knee joints-a ski leg with two knee joints was designed for an above-knee skier. One knee joint was for walking, and the other for skiing. When the leg is used for skiing, the upper knee joint is locked and the lower knee joint is used-controlled by a compression spring-as it keeps the leg in the flexed position required for skiing. With the amputee's weight on the coil spring, the ski knee can flex as the amputee goes down the hill but will not collapse and buckle. An adjustable ankle to permit the foot to flex to keep the ski parallel to the hill when going down the slopes was also incorporated.

Martin’s ski leg is an ecto-skeletal unit designed to transmit all the energy from the leg into a conventional ski boot and to take advantage of the boot’s engineering. The design has a hard block ankle and no energy storage so leaning into a turn allows pressure to be exerted on the inside or outside edge of the ski.

When the angle of ice steepens, and more security than the cross-body technique(piolet ramasse) provides is desirable, the axe is planted in the anchor position(piolet ancre)... : with the outside hand just above the spike, the axe is swung so that the pick is anchored in the ice in front and above the climber's head with the shaft parallel to the slope. The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. The axe is removed by pushing the shaft toward the ice and lifting the pick up and out of the ice.

When the slope becomes too steep to descend facing outward, the climber faces sideways and descends diagonally .... Footwork changes from the duck walk (en canard) to the same flat-foot technique which was used to ascend diagonally. The axe is used in the anchor position (piolet ancre): with the outside arm, the climber swings the axe out in front and plants the pick in the ice, then flat-foots diagonally down below the axe. The shaft rotates as the climber passes below it.

The main torsional failure had developed from an area of fatigue failure which had multiple origins in the base of the weld joining the landing gear actuating fork bolt attachment to the torque tube. The positions of the fatigue origins were all consistent with loads resulting from driving the main gear into the locked down position. It was not possible to determine the order of the number of gear actuations which had occurred between the initiation of the fatigue and the eventual torsional rupture.

A drilling machine in which a vertical drill moves into the work, which is stationary.

A drill press is preferable to a hand drill when the location and orientation of the hole must be controlled accurately. A drill press is composed of a base that supports a column, the column in turn supports a table. Work can be supported on the table with a vise or hold down clamps, or the table can be swiveled out of the way to allow tall work to be supported directly on the base. Height of the table can be adjusted with a table lift crank than locked in place with a table lock. The column also supports a head containing a motro. The motor turns the spindle at a speed controlled by a variable speed control dial. The spindle holds a drill chuck to hold the cutting tools(drill bits, center drills, deburring tools, etc.). The attitude indicator(also called the artificial horizon or the gyro horizon) provides the pilot with an artificial horizon as a means of reference when the natural horizon cannot be seen... The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument. The attitude of the aircraft in relation to the horizon is indicated by a split bar or, on some instruments, by a miniature airplane... When the airplane noses up, the miniature airplane rises above the horizon bar, indicating a nose high condition. When the airplane noses down, the miniature airplane sinks below the horizon bar, indicating a nose down condition. When the airplane banks, the miniature airplane banks on the horizon bar and the pointer indicates the degree of bank on the index scale... In the caged position, the gyro is locked with the miniature airplane showing level flight.

L'horizon artificiel [...] est essentiellement constitué par un gyroscope tournant à vitesse élevée dont la principale caractéristique est la fixité dans l'espace. Il reste fixe tandis que le boîtier solidaire du tableau de bord se déplace avec l'avion. [...] La maquette qui représente l'avion (ailes et cône d'hélice) est solidaire du tableau de bord. Elle se déplace devant un tambour sur lequel figure une représentation de l'horizon naturel, de la terre (en noir) et du ciel (en bleu). Ce tambour gradué en degré permet de déterminer l'assiette. La couronne supérieure porte, de part et d'autre du repère origine, trois repères principaux à 30, 60 et 90° permettant de mesurer l'inclinaison.

Le gyroscope de l'indicateur de virage est généralement fixé selon un angle de 30 degrés. Lorsque l'avion vire, la force centrifuge entraîne la précession du gyroscope. L'importance de la précession fait s'incliner vers la gauche ou vers la droite un avion miniature situé sur le cadran de l'instrument. Plus le virage est rapide, plus la précession est forte, d'où une inclinaison plus importante de l'avion miniature.

Lorsqu'on lève le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé [de l'horizon artificiel] monte au-dessus de la barre d'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez haut. Lorsqu'on baisse le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé cale sous l'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez bas. Lorsque l'avion s'incline, l'avion stylisé s'incline par rapport à la barre d'horizon et l'aiguille indique le nombre de degrés d'inclinaison sur l'échelle graduée. [...] Lorsqu'il est verrouillé, le gyroscope est immobilisé de telle façon que l'avion-symbole affiche le vol en palier.

Ne pas confondre avec l'«avion-symbole» du conservateur de cap (ou gyroscope directionnel) qui est représenté à la verticale sur le limbe alors qu'ici la maquette se présente à l'horizontale.
