The out of battery firing is one of the worst possible catastrophic failures that can happen with a firearm. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. A drill press is preferable to a hand drill when the location and orientation of the hole must be controlled accurately.
