The Doppler log can measure both the speed over the water and the speed over the ground.... The optimal speed of a ship can be determined for a specific trip under certain financial conditions.... It appears that data based on the Doppler speed log recording the speed over water are more appropriate for the determination of the functional relationship between speed and power.

The nautical measure of speed, one knot being a speed of one nautical mile (6,080 feet) per hour.

OBS

One knot equals about 1 1/7 statute miles per hour.

OBS

The term comes from the knots on the line of a chip log which were spaced at a distance of 47 feet 3 inches. The number of these knots which ran out while a 28-second sand-glass emptied itself gave the speed of the ship in nautical miles per hour. As a measure of speed the term is always knots, and never knots an hour.

The longitudinal and the lateral speed of the ship may be measured by means of a sonar doppler log which operates on the principle that a sonar signal transmitted from a moving object and reflected back from a stationary surface will indicate a shift in frequency; this shift in frequency is proportional to the speed relative to the stationary surface of the moving object, which in this case will be the ship.
