Pelagic longline gear is composed of a long length of mainline deployed across ocean attached to numerous baited "branchlines" that are suspended in the water column between regularly spaced floats. Each branchline connects the mainline to a single, baited hook with anywhere from 4 to 30 or more branchlines (baited hooks) set between floats. The floats may be attached directly to the mainline for a shallower set or connected to "floatlines" to target deeper-dwelling species. Each section of mainline with its branchlines between two adjacent floats is defined as a "basket" of gear as traditional style "basket gear" was composed of mainline sections that were stored in baskets when not in use.

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size.

Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The saw operates vertically up and down. Operated by two men, a man on top, known as the "Top Dog", guided the saw as it was pulled down in a cutting motion by the "Underdog. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. The block can be taken off to allow the saw to be threaded through the saw cut.

White Pass and Yukon Railway, at 175 km long, was the steepest pitched railway in Canada. Work began in 1898, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, to provide transportation from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Building of the narrow gauge railway was an extremely difficult engineering feat, requiring extensive blasting, tunnels and precarious bridging. Thirty-five of the 35 000 men who worked on construction were killed. The summit of White Pass was reached in February 1899 and the "last spike" was driven at Carcross on 29 July 1900. The gold was exhausted by the time work was complete, though the line struggled along carrying passengers and freight. The mining boom in the Yukon revived the railway, as lead-zinc was hauled from Faro, Mayo and Clinton Creek. The shutdown of the WP&Y in 1982, as a result of the collapse of the mining boom, deprived Whitehorse of some employment and its sea rail link.

A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept.

More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space.

On a fait circuler dans le tuyau de l'huile à 160 °F (71 °C) de juillet 1971 à janvier 1972, ce qui provoqua la formation d'un bulbe de dégel autour du pipe-line.

Basket : this is the version known in the USA and Macao as Jai Alai. In Basque it's called saski-pilota(literally : basket-ball) and cesta-punta in Spanish. A cavesson resembles a heavy, well fitting halter and is the preferred headpiece for longeing (lungeing) English horses. The shoeboxsized spectrophotometer-called MAESTRO(Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation)-is the most advanced in a long line of MSC instruments that have flown on balloons, high-altitude research aircraft and space shuttle missions over the past 10 years. MAESTRO and other spectrophotometers operate on the principle that different gases absorb different wavelengths of light, ranging from short, ultraviolet(UV) rays to long, near-infrared ones. Each gas, therefore, has its own "fingerprint" or distinct spectrum of absorption. This makes it possible to identify which gases are present from changes in the brightness of sunlight at different wavelengths between light coming directly from the Sun and light that has passed through the atmosphere on the way to the spectrophotometer. Ozone, for example, absorbs UV light and is, therefore, essential to preventing high levels of these rays from reaching the Earth's surface. As the Sun rises and sets, its rays slice through different layers of the atmosphere and out into space. MAESTRO will be equipped with more than 2000 separate detectors record the full spectrum of wavelengths emitted by direct sunlight and by sunlight travelling through these layers. These data will then be analyzed to provide precise measurements of gases and aerosol particles at different heights in the atmosphere. SCISAT-1 will orbit the Earth 15 times a day at a height of 650 kilometres, allowing MAESTRO to take measurements of 30 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours.

Le spectrophotomètre, qui est de la taille d'une boîte à chaussures, porte le nom de MAESTRO pour «Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation» (Mesure de l'extinction des aérosols par occultation dans la stratosphère et dans la troposphère); il est le plus perfectionné d'une longue série d'instruments du SMC qui ont été embarqués à bord de ballons, d'avions de recherche en haute altitude et de navettes spatiales en mission au cours des dix dernières années. Le fonctionnement de MAESTRO, ainsi que d'autres spectrophotomètres, repose sur le principe que différents gaz absorbent différentes longueurs d'onde lumineuse, depuis les rayons ultraviolets (UV) à ondes courtes jusqu'aux rayons du proche-infrarouge à plus grande longueur d'onde. Chaque gaz, par conséquent, a sa propre «empreinte», c'est-à-dire son propre spectre d'absorption. Grâce à cela, il est possible de déterminer quels gaz sont présents à partir des changements dans l'intensité de la lumière du soleil à différentes longueurs d'onde entre la lumière qui provient directement du soleil et la lumière qui a traversé l'atmosphère avant de se rendre au spectrophotomètre. Bien que d'une conception similaire à celle de ses prédécesseurs, MAESTRO est le premier dispositif pourvu de deux spectrophotomètres distincts qui fonctionnent simultanément pour être en mesure d'enregistrer toutes les longueurs d'ondes du spectre. Les instruments utilisés antérieurement devaient être munis de filtres différents selon qu'ils mesuraient les rayons UV ou la lumière visible du spectre; c'était là un procédé qui réduisait le temps d'observation précieux dont on disposait. Pour obtenir un profil vertical complet de l'atmosphère au lever et au coucher du Soleil, MAESTRO recueillera des données sur toutes les longueurs d'onde du spectre correspondant à une hauteur donnée, ceci en seulement un tiers de seconde. Cela permettra aux scientifiques de détecter dans le profil vertical des gaz des détails d'une très grande précision, par exemple à un kilomètre d'altitude.

For visualization purposes, the station's direction of motion is called the velocity vector, or V-bar for short. By convention, points in front of the station are said to be on the positive V-bar while points behind are considered negative. The imaginary line connecting the station with the center of the Earth is called the radius vector, or R-bar. Points directly below the station along this line are considered positive while points above are considered negative. Endeavour, then, will approach the station along the plus R-bar. The station will be oriented with its long axis aligned with the velocity vector, with the Unity module in "front" and Zvezda behind. Unity's nadir and zenith ports will be oriented as their names imply. This orientation, or attitude, is known as "XVV, "i. e., the station's X axis is aligned with the velocity vector. The terminal rendezvous sequence will begin with a rocket firing(TI) as Endeavour trails the station by about eight nautical miles. Once the shuttle reaches the plus R-bar, commander Brent Jett will guide the ship up from directly below. As he nears the station, he will yaw the shuttle 180 degrees so its tail is pointing in the direction of motion and its nose toward the minus V-bar. Assuming a good linkup, the shuttle will begin controlling the station's orientation for the duration of Endeavour's mission, moving the lab back into an "X-POP" attitude with the station's X axis perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. In this orientation, the long axis of the station is broadside to the velocity vector.

Control-line model airplanes are flown in a circle, attached to a handle by a set of lines. The pilot can control the flight of the model by manipulating the handle. Flying model airplanes on lines has a long and illustrious history. The earliest attempts at "control-line" used one line attached to a long pole. The pilot would cause the airplane to climb or dive by "leading" it with the pole. The person usually credited with inventing the now widely used two line system is Jim Walker, who came up with the idea sometime in the 30s or 40s. The two line system(often referred to a "U-Control", and used on perhaps 99% of control line models) uses a triangular bellcrank to transfer the movement of the wires to the pushrod, connected to the elevator and/or flap control horns. Some Speed flyers use "monoline", which is a system that utilizes line twisting for control.
