Modern heap leach pads are large engineered structures, lined with an impermeable layer of plastic(referred to as a geosynthetic membrane) and placed over a prepared surface that is typically a compacted soil layer. Ore is placed(heaped) on the lined pad and treated with chemicals to dissolve(leach) a metal of interest while protecting the environment. The plastic liner placed at the bottom and around the sides of the pad prevents chemicals from leaking into the soil and contaminating groundwater. Prior to insertion of the liner pipe, the existing culvert must be cleaned of all debris either by flushing or manual removal. Any rust or spalls must be cleaned and removed as well as protrusions into the pipe. A jacking pit must be constructed with adequate size to contain lengths of pipe to be inserted, grouting equipment and any other equipment necessary to perform the insertion. The liner is normally pushed into the existing culvert, but occasionally it is pulled, or a combination of pulling and pushing is used. Seam Testing Methods... Vacuum chamber(boxes) have been used where a 3-ft-long box with a transparent top is placed over the seam and a vacuum of approximately 2. 5 lb/in. superscript 2] applied. When a leak is encountered the soapy solution originally placed over the seam shows bubbles. These bubbles are due to air entering from beneath the liner and passing through the unbonded zone.
