There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The Mohawks, who were commonly referred to as Iroquois by the French, formed a League of Five Nations of the people of the Longhouse several generations prior to the arrival of Europeans on the North American continent. The Oneidas, "Standing Stone People", had their villages west of the Mohawks around Oneida Lake. The Onondagas, "Peoples" of the Hills", settled along Onondaga Creek; the Cayugas, "Great Pipe People", by Cayuga Lake; the Senecas, "People of the Great Mountain", alongside Canadaigua Lake... The Five nations refer to themselves as the "Hotinonsonni" which translated into English means "The People of the Longhouse". The French used the term "Iroquois Confederacy" while the British used the term "Six Nations Confederacy" when referring to the Hotinonsonni... The Hotinonsonni allied themselves into one League. They compared themselves to a long bark house, where there would be five fireplaces, but all would form one family. The Mohawks are the keepers of the eastern door of that Longhouse. The Mohawks, who were commonly referred to as Iroquois by the French, formed a League of Five Nations of the people of the Longhouse several generations prior to the arrival of Europeans on the North American continent. The Oneidas, "Standing Stone People", had their villages west of the Mohawks around Oneida Lake. The Onondagas, "Peoples" of the Hills", settled along Onondaga Creek; the Cayugas, "Great Pipe People", by Cayuga Lake; the Senecas, "People of the Great Mountain", alongside Canadaigua Lake... The Five nations refer to themselves as the "Hotinonsonni" which translated into English means "The People of the Longhouse". The French used the term "Iroquois Confederacy" while the British used the term "Six Nations Confederacy" when referring to the Hotinonsonni... The Hotinonsonni allied themselves into one League. They compared themselves to a long bark house, where there would be five fireplaces, but all would form one family. The Mohawks are the keepers of the eastern door of that Longhouse. Linear proton accelerators. The design principle applied in linear accelerators for protons was originated by Luis Alvarez at Berkeley in 1946. It is based on the formation of standing electromagnetic waves in a long cylindrical metal tank, or cavity, as it is sometimes called. In the design that has been adopted, the electric field is parallel to the axis of the tank. Most of these accelerators operate at frequencies of about 200 MHz. During the time required for a proton to traverse one of these tanks, the accelerating electric fields undergo many reversal of direction. In Alvarez’ design, the decelerating effect of the field during the intervals when it opposes the motion of the particles is prevented by installing on the axis of the tank a number of "drift tubes".... The electric field is zero inside the drift tubes, and if their lengths are properly chosen, the protons cross the gap between adjacent drift tubes when the direction of the field produces acceleration and are shielded by the drift tubes when the field in the tank would decelerate them.
