The earth's atmosphere is mostly transparent to the incoming solar radiation, and hence the above radiation from the sun is absorbed by the earth surface. The earth's atmosphere in turn absorbs the terrestrial long wave radiation from the earth surface resulting in a situation where the atmosphere is primarily heated from below. This results in a vertical distribution of air temperature, wherein the air temperature decreases with height.

CVGs [Coriolis vibrating gyroscope] have three features in common: a mechanical resonator, an oscillator and a force-displacement sensor. One mode of the resonator is maintained in resonance by an oscillator loop while oscillations are induced in a second vibration mode. The amplitude of the oscillations gives a signal proportional to the input angular rate. A wide variety of resonators, actuation and sensing schemes are possible. The simplest resonator is a tuning fork.

Thermal lift is created by areas of warm air rising from the land. As the land heats up with the warmth of the sun, the air above it will begin to warm by the heat radiating from the land. This is especially true over terrain such as a freshly plowed field or a paved parking area. As the air heats, it will begin to rise and allow cooler air to move in to replace it. This air, in turn, will heat up, rise, and you will get a continuous current of rising air. As long as the air is rising at a rate greater than a glider sinks while in flight, the glider can sustain lift.

Bacterial leaf stripe(Pseudomonas syringae subsp. andropogonis) is widely distributed and destructive on many types of sorghums(grain, forage, and sweet or sorgo), sudangrass, and broomcorn as well as on several other related grasses. Long, narrow stripes(1/4 inch by 9 inches or more) form on the leaves. These stripes are initially water-soaked, irregular, and bounded by veins. These areas soon dry and turn brick red, dark purplish red, reddish brown, or tan-to-dark brown depending on the sorghum variety. The color is continuous throughout the lesion. Later, the stripes elongate and fuse to form irregular blotches that cover a large part of the leaf surface and extend into the leaf sheath. Stalks and floral structures may show similar but more restricted lesions.

Student Activity : Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge : Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction(this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth(looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? If the ISS "tumbles" as it orbits the Earth, can you figure out how to keep the solar panels always facing the Sun?

The buckwheat flower has no petals-the sexual parts, the ovary, three styles and eight stamens being enclosed in the petallike sepas. Four of the anthers bend out but turn their pollen inward. The other four turn their pollen outward(Knuth 1909, pp. 341-342). Some plants have flowers, referred to as the "thrum" type, with short styles and long filaments so the stamens extend above the styles. Other flowers, referred to as "pin" types, have long styles and short filaments so the stigma is avobe the anthers. Occasionally, the styles and stamens are at the same height. The long stamens and filaments are fully 3 mm; the shorter ones, about 2 mm. Although each plant bears flowers of only one form, the seeds from either form will produce plants having the dimorphic forms in about equal numbers. The thress styles lead to a single ovary with one ovule, so a flower can produce only one seed, which is about one-quarter inch long.

A windlass consisting of a vertical and horizontal spar with a bight of the rope taken around the horizontal spar, which is used to move heavy loads over short distances.

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. Make sure that the rope leaving the vertical spar is close to the same level on both sides to prevent the spar from tipping over.

A boom derrick is a lifting device that incorporates the advantages of a gin pole and the long horizontal reach of a boom. Use the boom derrick to lift and swing medium-size loads in a 90-degree arc on either side of the resting position of the boom, for a total swing of 180 degrees. When employing a boom derrick in lifting heavy loads, set it on a turn plate or turn wheel to allow the mast and boom to swing as a unit. A mast is a gin pole used with a boom. The mast can swing more than 180 degrees when it is set on a turn plate or turn wheel.

The Pioneer drone(developed by the Israelis and produced in the U. S.) has a wingspan of 17 feet and is 14 feet long. It is powered by a 26 horsepower snowmobile engine and has a range of about 100 miles and a flight duration of five hours. It can carry a multitude of sensors including television and FLIR. The drone is catapulted into the air and while airborne runs on liquid fuel. It is guided by an electronic box with a joystick that the operator uses to turn the plane left or right, up or down in the same way remote-controlled model planes work. Each Pioneer costs about $500, 000 and carries a $400, 000 video camera that can take highly-detailed pictures from 2, 000 feet and transmit them 100 miles away.

On-Top Formers. A feature common to all the formers discussed thus far is that the sheet plies are picked up and carried on the underside of the felt. This transfer method restricts operating speeds and sheet dryness levels. Another problem is that the sheet must be righted before it enters the press section; the usual procedure is to run the forming section in the opposite direction to the rest of the machine, and turn the felt over with a long carryback section. Less often, the delicate sheet is transferred from one felt to another entering the press section. The remaining formers to be discussed place the sheet on top of the felt or fabric. This approach eliminates the speed and dewatering limitations. But, housekeeping and maintenance aspects must be stressed since the sheet is more vulnerable to drips and spills.

Les formeurs superposés. Les formeurs dont il a jusqu'ici été question ont pour caractéristique commune que les différentes couches de la feuille sont levées et transportées sous un feutre. La méthode de transfert qui prévaut alors limite la vitesse des machines et la siccité des feuilles. Un autre problème rencontré est qu'il faut aligner la feuille avant qu'elle n'entre dans la section des presses; la technique couramment utilisée consiste à installer la section de formation de sorte que le sens du trajet de la feuille y soit à l'opposé du reste de la machine et de faire tourner le feutre autour d'une longue section de renvoi. Plus rarement, la feuille, qui est fragile, est transférée du feutre à un autre feutre à l'entrée des presses. Pour ce qui est des formeurs dont il sera ici question, la feuille est placée sur le dessus d'un feutre ou d'une toile synthétique. Cette façon de procéder permet d'éliminer les limites de vitesse et d'extraction de l'eau. Mais elle impose davantage de travail de surveillance et de maintenance parce que la feuille est alors plus vulnérable aux ruissellements ou projections d'eau.
