The rotor of the air-driven gyro is mounted in a sealed housing. Filtered air is brought into the gyro housing through passages in the rear pivot, the gimbal ring, and the side pivots. Gyro that tends to compensate the motion of aircraft [or similar body] with reference to the longitudinal(roll) axis.

Roll-rate gyro. The roll-rate gyro is less sensitive than the P [pitch] and Y [yaw] rate gyros. Roll-rate control limits fast roll rates during boost, before roll stabilization takes place. This gyro damps the missile’s rolling oscillations about the normal flight position.

The gyropilot, commonly called an automatic pilot (q.v.), consists basically of three devices, each of which detects disturbances of the aircraft in one plane and corrects for these disturbances by moving the appropriate control ... The roll disturbance is detected by a roll rate gyroscope and by a roll angle pendulum, which senses displacement.

[In the] vibrating-beam rate gyros... piezoelectric crystals on either side of a beam are alternately stressed at the beam's natural frequency, causing the beam to vibrate. Piezoelectric crystals on the other two sides of the beam are used to synchronously detect rotation rates about the beam's longitudinal axis.

Les gyromètres font appel aux microtechnologies. [...] Le marché des microgyromètres est principalement tiré par les applications automobiles (suspension active, déclenchement d'airbag en cas de tonneaux), qui requièrent une précision de 1°/s. La précision visée pour les applications aéronautiques ou de navigation est nettement supérieure : il faut pouvoir mesurer des vitesses de rotation de 0,001°/s. La structure, réalisée en SOI, utilise un concept de diapason constitué de deux masses vibrantes dans le plan du substrat. Les deux masses, supportées par un cadre relié au substrat par deux poutres souples en rotation, sont excitées en vibration en opposition de phase.
