The rock above the immediate roof.

There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned, the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof.... Main roof is composed of strata above the immediate coal bed roof that forms the overburden to the surface. Frequently, the term is applied only to a massive, strong rock layer that does not break or bend until all of the coal is removed by pillaring or by longwall mining.

A form of advance support in loose ground for tunnels and workings.

OBS

Forepoles are driven from behind the permanent supports and into the loose ground and usually angled outwards. The method provides temporary protection to the miners at the face until space is available for erecting another set of permanent supports. On longwall faces, slots may be made in a soft band over the coal seam into which steel straps are forced. After the coal has been worked, the straps may be supported by props or again advanced to provide a measure of pre-support at the face.

Its main cutting unit is the trepanner wheel with cutting arms, one at each end of the machine to enable it to cut in both directions on the face. Also fitted are a vertical, back-shearing jib, a floor-cutting jib, duplicated to enable cutting in either direction and, if necessary, a roof-cutting disc. The machine is used in conjunction with an armoured flexible conveyor on a prop-free-front face; suitable for seams between 3 and 4 ft thick, though it can work in thicker seams if the top coal falls freely.

A heavy, chain-type flexible conveyor capable of being advanced with the face without dismantling.

It is designed to carry a coal-cutter or cutter-loader or to guide and hold a plough against the face. It may be advanced by horizontal hydraulic rams which are fixed at about 20 ft intervals on the waste side of the conveyor. It is often employed on prop-free-front faces with hand filling, and has a capacity of about 200-300 t.p.h.

The A. F. C. was developed in Germany by the Gewerkschaft Eisenhutte Westfalia during W. W. 2. A few units were tried out in Britain shortly after the war and by the sixties they were being installed on all the major "longwall" faces in Britain.... A heavy duty chain-type conveyor, the A. F. C. was nicknamed "Panzer" short for "Panzerforderer" by the miners.

A longwall cutter-loader of the plough type, with two cutting blades, one at each end, operated by a hydraulic cylinder which can give a powerful thrust(about 42 tons) to the blades and cause them to bite into the coal. While this thrust is being exerted, the machine is anchored by means of a vertical jack which engages the roof and floor. The jack is built on sliding bars and the machine is moved by sliding the jack along the bars to the next position for anchoring the machine. La firme Mavor et Coulson construit une machine appelée Samson stripper qui abat le charbon par arrachement d'un copeau épais (environ 60 cm) chargé directement dans le convoyeur de taille. La machine est automotrice. Elle comprend un moteur qui entraîne une pompe à huile agissant sur une unité de propulsion. Celle-ci est formée d'un étançon vertical à double effet qui coince la machine entre mur et toit et d'un cylindre horizontal muni d'un piston également à double effet. Le piston horizontal porte, à chacune de ses extrémités, un coin d'attaque qui peut exercer sur le massif une pression de 42 t. La réaction est supportée par l'étançon vertical. On desserre ensuite l'étançon de sorte que le bâti de la machine repose de tout son poids sur le mur et que l'unité de propulsion devient libre de glisser de 80 cm afin de se préparer à effectuer un nouveau cycle d'avancement.

A rapid plough for use on longwall faces. The machine is superior to the original Loebbe Hobel and can negotiate small faults or washouts on the face by the use of more than one plough. It is suitable for seams from 2 to 8 ft thick, with reasonably good roof and floor. The plough travels along the face at a speed of 75 f. p. m. with a cutting depth from 1 1/2 to 3 in. and the broken coal is loaded by the plough-shaped body on to an armoured conveyor. Le Anbauhobel ou rabot rajouté. C'est une modification du rabot rapide. Ici, la tête de commande du rabot est indépendante de la tête motrice du blindé et s'adapte latéralement à celui-ci [...] Une deuxième tête peut être placée en taille à n'importe quel endroit, par exemple avant une faille qui empêcherait de raboter plus loin. Quelquefois, cette deuxième tête est remplacée par une simple étoile de retour fixée en n'importe quel point du convoyeur blindé [...] Le rabot rajouté entraîne quelques complications électriques, les moteurs devant tourner dans les deux sens et avoir deux protections contre les surintensités. Par contre, on n'est plus obligé de démonter complètement le rabot lorsqu'un accident apparaît en taille. On rabote au contraire ce que l'on veut. On peut même avoir deux rabots indépendants pour deux moitiés de taille se trouvant par exemple de part et d'autre d'une faille.

The broken coal is loaded on to an armoured flexible conveyor which, with the aid of hydraulic rams, holds the plough up to the coalface and causes the knives to bite into the coal as they are pulled along. The driving of a narrow roadway results in the development of a pressure arch over the excavation. The strata within the arch bend slightly and cease to support the overlying beds, and the load is transferred to the solid coal or rock along the sides. The wider the roadway, the greater is the span of the arch and its height at the crown. A similar but larger pressure arch is formed across a longwall face, with one leg resting on the solid coal and the other on the solid pack behind the coal face.

The rock mass is first fractured by drilling and blasting and then mucked out through drift headings underneath the rock mass cave. It qualifies as a safe mining method because the miners always work inside drift-size openings.

Sous le terme générique anglais de «drift» qui s'applique exclusivement à des galeries creusées dans la direction du gisement (en français «traçage»), on regroupe toute la variété des galeries : voie de fond, voie de niveau, galerie en direction, galerie de roulage, etc. Pour simplifier les choses, nous n'établirons qu'une seule différence générale entre galerie (drift) et travers-banc (cross-cut). Le travers-banc (cross-cut) désigne une coupe en travers du gisement; son rôle, en recoupant la veine, est essentiellement d'établir la connexion entre les voies de roulage de niveau creusées dans le gisement. Le travers-banc sert également dans les travaux de recherches ou de prospection. La galerie (drift), creusée dans le gisement d'après son vrai sens de galerie en direction ou de niveau, a une triple fonction : a) elle sert de base à l'exploitation des chantiers (stopes); b) elle est utilisée comme voie de roulage [...]; c) elle sert aussi subsidiairement comme voie de recherches dans les travaux de prospection.

Haveuses Shortwall. Elles sont très employées aux U.S.A. On les a baptisées shortwall (front court) par opposition aux haveuses de taille ou «longwall». Elles sont en deux parties assemblées par boulons et goujons (au lieu de trois parties dans les longwall). L'avant contient le moteur. L'arrière comprend à la fois l'attaque du bras (bras rigide qui se prolonge sous la haveuse) et celle de deux tambours de halage à axe horizontal. A heavy, crawler-tracked, 200-horsepower cutter loader designed for longwall faces in seams over 4½ feed thick, and takes a buttock 5 feet wide. The maximum cutting head is 7½ feet....
