Telescopes, binoculars, and cameras need solar filters for two reasons :(1) to protect them from intense sunlight and heat and(2) to ensure that you don’t accidentally look at the Sun through an unfiltered instrument. In every case, the solar filter must be attached to the front of your telescope, binoculars, or camera lens. If you don’t have eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer, you can use an indirect viewing method, which does not involve looking directly at the Sun. One way is to use a pinhole projector, which has a small opening(for example, a hole punched in an index card) and projects an image of the Sun onto a nearby surface. With the Sun behind you, pass sunlight through a small opening(for example, a hole punched in an index card) and project a solar image onto a nearby surface(for example, another card, a wall, or the ground). A pasta colander makes a terrific pinhole projector, as does a straw hat or anything else with a bunch of small holes in it.
