The slit lamp examination uses a tool that provides a magnified three-dimensional(3-D) view of the parts of the eye. During the examination, your doctor can look at the front parts of the eye. These parts include the clear, outer covering(cornea), the lens, and coloured part(iris). The doctor can also see the front part of the thick fluid(vitreous gel) that fills the large space in the middle of the eye. Special lenses can be placed between the slit lamp and the cornea(or on the cornea) to help the doctor see deeper structures of the eye. The Amsler grid is a chart that is specifically designed to qualitatively analyze the disturbances of visual function that accompany the beginning and evolution of maculopathies. The charts are a series of lined and patterned grids that test the central visual field within 10 degrees of fixation where the plates are held at 1/3 of a meter from the eyes. Each square of the grid subtends [one] degree of visual angle, making the ability to define the location of small defects rather easy.... The Amsler grid test is quick and easy to administer. The patient is instructed to look at the central dot and asked if, in fact, he/she can see it. If not, the patient may have a central scotoma, and the examiner must query the patient regarding exactly what he/she "does" see. If the patient sees the dot, the examiner asks if the patient is aware that surrounding it are numerous squares. In process printing, the colors are cyan, yellow, magenta and black. To minimize one dot of a certain color overprinting another(thereby causing a strange, unpredictable effect) each color screen is printed at a different angle. Using this technique, many colors can be created. For example, a red is created by mixing equal amounts of yellow and magenta, but an orange is achieved by mixing more yellow than magenta... The intensity of the color is controlled by the size of the component dots. For example, a solid red is composed of 100% yellow and 100% magenta; a 50% red(more pink than red) is composed of 50% yellow and 50% magenta.
