A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept.  3, fiche 2, Anglais, - saltbox%20house

More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame" :"Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Student Activity : Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge :Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction(this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth(looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? Activité de l'élève : Placez un globe terrestre sur une table au centre d'une pièce. Faites le tour de la pièce de manière à ce que le globe soit toujours directement dans votre champ de vision. Comment devez-vous tourner pour que le globe soit toujours devant vous? Comment la Station spatiale internationale doit-elle tourner pendant chaque orbite autour de la Terre pour que ce soit toujours le même côté qui soit «orienté» vers la Terre? Défi : En prenant le pôle Nord comme point d'observation, nous constatons que la Station spatiale internationale orbite autour de la Terre dans le sens anti-horaire (dans le même sens que la Terre tourne autour de son axe). Faites un croquis de la Terre (en prenant le pôle Nord comme point d'observation) et reproduisez l'orbite empruntée par la Station spatiale internationale. En supposant que le Soleil est à gauche du croquis, qu'arrive-t-il aux panneaux solaires pendant que l'ISS tourne autour de la Terre?
