Lowpass filtering smoothes an image so that large objects are transformed into homogeneous zones and small objects are reduced in intensity and/or merged into the larger regions. In the process, edges are reduced in intensity so that the details of an object are lost and objects in close proximity to each other are combined. An example of this is the acceleration due to gravity. An object in free fall has a negative acceleration even though it is increasing speed. The object in brightening mechanical pulps is to decolourize or brighten the lignin or other colouring components without dissolving them so that the yield advantage is not lost.
