Détecteurs à ionisation d'argon ou d'hélium. Les deux détecteurs fonctionnent suivant un principe analogue. Des atomes du gaz vecteur Ar ou He passent dans un état excité sous l'influence d'un rayonnement radioactif issu généralement d'une source de tritium. Les composés dont le potentiel d'ionisation est inférieur à l'énergie des atomes excités du gaz vecteur sont ionisés par ceux-ci. Les ions formés sont collectés par une électrode portée à un potentiel de 300 à 1 000 V. As a means of exciting noble gases at atmospheric pressures, Lovelock developed a spark device of high sensitivity, capable of detecting as little as 10^{minus 13} mole of most organic materials. The detector consisted of a spark gap made of platinum wire sealed in a glass tube. The voltage across the 5-10 mm spark gap is measured with an electrostatic voltmeter. Lovelock developed a small detector intended for use with open tubular columns, and a new triode detector having a sensitivity 1000 times greater than his original detector... The triode detector... incorporates a ring electrode, in addition to the normal anode and cathode electrodes, which separates the background current(positive ions liberated by vapor/metastable argon reactions or collisions) of the primary electron stream from the signal current.
