LOW ASSUMPTION [8 fiches]

Fiche 1 2010-04-27

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Economic Fluctuations
  • Economic Planning
CONT

An inflation-targeting policy is based on the assumption that low inflation is an appropriate objective of monetary policy. Under this regime, the central bank announces the predicted inflation rate for the year ahead and this commitment determines exchange rate behaviour.

Terme(s)-clé(s)
  • inflation targeting policy

Français

Domaine(s)
  • Fluctuations économiques
  • Planification économique
CONT

Par ailleurs, les principales banques centrales mènent une politique de ciblage de l’inflation afin d’affirmer la crédibilité de leur politique monétaire et de prévenir durablement les tensions inflationnistes ou déflationnistes futures sans se préoccuper des bulles.

DEF

Analytical techniques used to determine relationships between a feature location and its next order neighbours.

CONT

The application of neighbourhood analysis of the probability images for density mapping was trialed in this pilot study. The results are promising for reclassifying woody vegetation into high, medium and low classes based on the assumption that probability varies with canopy density.

OBS

neighbourhood analysis: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

CONT

L'analyse de voisinage s'appuie sur les capacités des SIG [systèmes d'information géographique] à gérer les relations de contiguïté entre les objets. Elle permet de sélectionner les objets voisins d'un autre, cette définition de voisinage pouvant varier.

Fiche 3 2006-11-15

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
CONT

Parallel lamination - Not all types of lamination have the same mode of origin. Laminae in mud may be formed by periodic changes in the physical or chemical conditions of deposition. Laminae in sand may be produced rapidly and form under various conditions but is commonly related to changes in the paleo-hydrodynamic regime.

CONT

Parallel lamination was formed at bed-aggradation rates up to 4 mm/s... and bedload-layer sediment concentration up to 0. 36. This observation contradicts the generally held assumption that parallel lamination forms only from low-density flows and at low bed-aggradation rates.

OBS

parallel lamination: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Français

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
CONT

Fiche 5 2005-10-25

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

Free balloon whose path while moving upwards is visually observed in order to measure upper winds.

CONT

One expedient method for determining the winds aloft entails the launching and tracking of a pilot balloon, also known as a pibal. The name for these balloons that do not carry instruments apparently came from their use during the 19th century when they were launched prior to manned balloon ascents to help guide or "pilot" the manned balloons. The brightly colored helium filled balloon rises at a known ascent rate. However, the balloon is carried horizontally with the wind. Since the assumption is made that the balloon serves as a tracer of the wind, the horizontal motion of the balloon over measured time intervals can be used to determine the wind speed. An observer visually tracks the motion of the balloon with an instrument called a theodolite and records the elevation and azimuth angles at timed intervals. The sequence of observed elevation and azimuth information are plotted on a plotting board to obtain the balloon motion. The wind speed and direction at each selected level are determined. Wind observations may be limited by low cloud ceilings that obscure the balloon.

OBS

pilot balloon: term standardized by ISO.

Fiche 6 1996-05-13

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Radiation Protection
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

Biological effects of ionizing radiation.... at the upper end of the scale, there is no radiation exposure so high it will guarantee that every exposed individual will suffer the effect. Nor at the lower end is any exposure so low that it will carry no risk to anyone of inducing the effect. These radiation effects are therefore said to have "no threshold. "Logically, it follows that any exposure to radiation, no matter how small, carries some risk and that any reduction in exposure, even from an already very low level, confers some benefit. However, it is not always appreciated that the absence of a "safe" threshold is a theoretical assumption and a safety precaution rather than something that can be proven. It is also not well understood that the toxic effects of radiation, for which there is no defined safe level, may not differ fundamentally from those of some chemical toxins for which a "safe" level in the body or in the environment has been declared.

CONT

Complicating the problem of public perceptions of the level of risk associated with radioactive wastes is the confusion induced by two fundamental principles of radio-biological and radiation protection theory. The first is the "no-threshold" hypothesis, and the second is the "as low as reasonably achievable, "or ALARA, principle. The first principle holds that there is no threshold below which exposure to radiation is entirely safe. The "no threshold" hypothesis-that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, will increase the probability of a harmful consequence to an exposed individual-is an important scientific concept.... it is generally agreed that it is wise to err on the side of safety and work from the assumption that there is no safe level.

Fiche 7 1978-02-11

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
OBS

Griffith’s Theory postulates the presence of microscopic cracks within the material. The effect of these cracks is to produce concentrations of stress around their boundaries.

OBS

Griffith's Theory of failure is based on the assumption that the low order of tensile strength in common materials is due to the presence of small cracks or flaws. Actual stresses may occur around these flaws which are of the order of magnitude of molecular cohesion values, while the average tensile strength may be quite low. Mohr's Theory predicts that failure of materials is due to failure in shear, whereas Griffith's Theory postulates that it is due to failure at crack tips.

Domaine(s)

OBS

La théorie de Griffith nécessite la présence de fissures microscopiques dans le matériau. L'effet de ces fissures est de produire des concentrations de contraintes autour de leurs bordures.
