Assays of biochemical systems are carried out on a large scale in both industry and academia, so it is desirable to have an apparatus that allows these assays to be performed in a convenient and inexpensive fashion. Because they are relatively easy to handle and low in cost, microplates are often used for such studies. Microplates typically consist of a plurality of individual wells formed of polymeric materials. Each well includes sidewalls and a bottom so that an aliquot of a sample may be placed within each well. The wells may be arranged in relatively close proximity in a matrix pattern, allowing samples to be studied individually or as a group. Common sizes for microplates include matrices having dimensions of 4x6(24 wells) or 8x12(96 wells), although larger microplates are also used that may include matrices of hundreds or even thousands of wells.

Paste backfill is defined as an engineered mixture of fine solid particles(with binder) and water, containing between 72% and 85% solids by weight. Particles in a paste mixture will not settle out of the mixture if allowed to remain stationary in a tank or in a pipeline. It can be placed in stopes with or without binder addition depending on the strength requirements for backfill. Improved pumping technology, environmental concerns and the need for a low cost/high strength fill in mines are driving mine operators to consider paste backfill as a tailings management and mine backfill alternative. The main advantages and disadvantages of a paste backfill system over a conventional hydraulic backfill plant are generally accepted as :... higher strengths can be achieved with an equivalent cement content; drainage of water and slimes from the fill are minimized, reducing the need for bulkhead construction and extensive drainage works. This feature also reduces maintenance on sumps and mine de-watering pumps; in some cases, unclassified tailings can be used to make paste rather than just the coarse fraction as is the case for hydraulic backfill; shorter stope cycle times can be achieved because an equivalent strength can be achieved in a shorter time with paste backfill; paste backfill systems achieve lower porosities than conventional fill thereby increasing the tonnage of material that can be disposed of underground; and, since paste backfill is deposited as a non-segregated mass of backfill(because cement particles are not displaced by the internal movements of the draining water), more predictable strength properties for the fill can be achieved.

Paste backfilling of mines. A number of mines are installing paste fill systems to replace the current sand fill method. The justification and economies of this conversion include: higher production levels (less wait for dewatering), increased grade of ore to the mill, decrease of stope ore left as pillars, improved haulage with the removal of excess moisture, increased filling rates, and a higher strength fill with less waiting time. Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified.

The frugal use of expensive water trucked in from distant wells was a way of life in the parched desert village of Chungungo, Chile — located in one of the driest parts of the world. In addition to being costly, the water was often contaminated, contributing to poor sanitation, ill health, and low food production. Today, a simple technology collects water from fog, supplying villagers with two or three times more water than they once used and at a lower cost. Because our design is for a robot that is independently mobile, yet capable of conventional manipulation tasks, we call it the Self-Mobile Space Manipulator or(SM) 2. The robot can perform useful tasks such as visual inspection, material transport, and light assembly. It will be able to work independently or in cooperation with astronauts, and other robots.
