Exploration activities performed on the Moon by both humans and robotic spacecraft occur on a planetary surface that is comprised of unconsolidated fragmental rock material known as the lunar regolith. The lunar surface is covered by several layers of thick regolith formed by high-velocity micrometeoroid impacts, and is characterized by the steady bombardment of charged atomic particles from the sun and the stars. The lunar regolith includes rock fragments and, predominantly, much smaller particles that are generally referred to as lunar soil.

The prospecting rover scans for desired resources over the lunar surface where it directs itself to potential excavation sites, and the presence of ice is confirmed by a small sample extraction and analysis. Successful prospect location coordinates are then sent to the excavator rover. Subsequent to the receipt of the location data, the excavating rover navigates to the candidate site where it extracts and collects the regolith and lunar ice. It then hands off this mixture to the transportation rover in a collectible form.

Our results demonstrate the potential of using autonomous robots for autonomous in-situ resource utilization(ISRU) on the Moon.... To fulfill the mission requirements, a heterogeneous team of up to six rovers could be selected from three types of rovers : scout, hauler, and excavator... Each rover had unique capabilities to assist in the lunar ISRU mission task. The scout rover was equipped with a sensor package to detect volatile resources of different types underground. The excavator rover included a 4 degrees of freedom robotic arm with a bucket end-effector to collect the resources. The hauler rover included a truck bed to transport the resources to the processing plant.

Magelhaens is a lunar crater that lies along the southwestern edge of the Mare Fecunditatis, in the eastern part of the Moon's near side. It lies to the south-southwest of Goclenius crater, about midway between Gutenberg crater to the northwest and Colombo crater to the southeast. This crater has a somewhat slender and uneven outer rim that is only roughly circular. The somewhat smaller satellite crater ’Magelhaens A’ is attached to the southeastern rim. Within the inner walls of Magelhaens, the interior floor has been resurfaced by basaltic-lava, matching the same dark appearance as the lunar mare to the northeast. This floor is level and almost featureless.

Colombo is a lunar impact crater that lies on the strip of rough continental terrain between Mare Fecunditatis to the east and Mare Nectaris in the west. It is located to the south of Goclenius crater, and northwest of Cook crater. The rim of Colombo is circular, although slightly indented along the northwest where ’Colombo A’ intrudes slightly into the interior. The inner wall is asymmetrical, being much more narrow to the north and northwest and wider to the southeast. The rim is somewhat eroded, and several tiny craterlets lie along the inner wall to the southeast. The small satellite crater ’Colombo B’ lies across the south-southwestern rim.

Aristarchus is a prominent lunar impact crater that lies in the northwest part of the Moon's near side. It is considered the brightest of the large formations on the lunar surface, with an albedo nearly double that of most lunar features. The feature is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye, and is dazzling in a large telescope. It is also readily identified when most of the lunar surface is illuminated by earthshine.

Sponsored by ISAS [Institute of Space and Astronautical Science-Japan], this probe is to explore the interior structure of the Moon and could provide key data for understanding the origin of the solar system and planetary formation. It is a 520-kg spacecraft to be launched on ISAS's newly-developed M-5 rocket. Following a gravity-assist manoeuvre, it will fly as close as 40 km from the Moon and deploy three 13-kg seismic penetrators. These will burrow 30 cm into the lunar crust. The spacecraft will then be repositioned into a 300-km orbit. The seismic probes will be able to monitor deep moonquakes, mapping the lunar core.
