How bright is the Moon? That depends on a number of factors. The phase of the Moon is the primary one. Other obvious factors are the Earth-Moon and Sun-Moon distance as well as atmospheric transparency and extinction. This cover assembly was used to protect one of the five exterior docking lights on the Lunar Module as it was being prepared for launch. A free gyro that is not slaved to any Earth reference (as the vertical and directional gyros and the gyrocompass are) will tend to maintain a fixed direction in inertial space, that is, with respect to fixed stars. L'Horizon artificiel. Il mesure simultanément une assiette et une inclinaison. (...) Maskeline tested a means of finding longitude as sea called the method of lunar distances. This involved measuring the Moon’s position against the background of stars (the lunar distances were the star’s distances from the Moon). The Moon’s position in its orbit acted as a standard clock in the sky, to give a universal time scale (like modern Greenwich time) that could be read off from tables. "The libration in latitude" results from the inclination of about 6 1/2 ° between the moon's equator and the plane of its orbit.
